Idiot needs help with basic controls - brutal attack

I think I'm gimping myself by not being able to follow basic directions. I cannot seem to get a brutal attack to trigger. I'm playing on xbox controller standard settings. I even enabled the "prefer brutal attack" option to see if that changed anything. Working on passing phase 2 of the Phantom and I can't help but feel like I'd be having an easier go of it if I were actually taking advantage of all the brutal attack opportunities I'm missing out on.

I break the enemy, they sit there down on a knee or whatever and have the flashing red circle on them. I walk up to them and hit "X" (fast attack) and my dude just does a normal swing. I've tried pressing it, holding it, and tried pressing/holding Y too...he just always seems to execute a normal attack.

Please help steer me to the place in time where I have achieved competency in the basic controls. 😭

you need to bress B for a brutal attack its not like in the souls games where you bress the light attack button, I think the tutorial actually showed the controlls when u had to do ur first brutal

As said it's B-button on Xbox controller.

Also, don't do the brutal attack right away. If you look at the icon closely you can see it's like a clock counting down. You can hit them quite a bit for free damage while they're down, then do the brutal attack right before the icon expires.
