This game is INCREDIBLE in Linux!
To anyone who may be considering running this game under linux I must say my experience has been perfect. I have not encountered a single stutter or noticeable frame drop in my time playing. Not only does the game look and run incredibly well on my RX7600 8GB GPU, Ryzen 5 7600 8 C0re 16 Thread CPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM @6400MHZ, and a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro NVME SSD, but I did not have to change or do a single thing to the game for the experience I have had. Simply click install if you have Proton 9.0-4 set for all Steam games in the settings, or you can manually select it in the properties of the game and eureka, you are ready to go. I would say if for some reason you did run into an issue that trying Proton Glorious Eggrole would probably be your best bet. I am running Garuda M0kka Linux btw with an up to date Linux (ZEN) Kernel as well as up to date MESA Drivers and KDE Desktop! I hope you guys all have the same wonderful experience I have and if not be sure to let me know so I can help in any way that I can :)

Yea it is incredible how far Linux has come, Garuda M0kka has been serving me well and Steam in particular is just a dream to manage my games with in Linux! I even use it to install HoyoPlay for Zenless Z0ne Zer0 because the compatibility and ease of us with Steam and Proton is just next level, even better in my experience than using Lutris or Bottles to do similar things. Valve knocked it out of the park :)
Yea, it is very easy to manage games in Steam, but I prefer Lutris tbh. Because it has settings I can change and I often do. Like selecting the number of cores for a game that might not run well if there are more than 1 or 2 and there are other things I often find myself changing. In proton it's much harder to do and you need to actually fire up a terminal and manually switch wine prefix in some cases. Not too long ago I had to manually install some .net thing for the game and it was a hassle on steam.
Yea I have never personally needed to change anything because everything just works in steam including installing exe's using proton and running them through steam. Lutris has its moments for me but Steam and Heroic basically do it all. I still remember having to run terminal commands to install mfplat (I think) .dll to make cutscenes playable in Resident-Evil 2 Remake back in 2020... those where the days

I change the setting when there are some issues. For example, stuttering, or some other graphical problems, I can actually change the driver version in Lutris and I am honestly have no idea how to do it in Proton. I am not sure it's even possible. For example this game keeps throwing pop ups on me about "incorrect" driver. I just like overall flexibility.
But yes, I can't argue that Steam makes it super easy, especially installing all DLCs and such. There are mainly 2 things I dislike about Steam in general: one is the save files are separated from the main game folder, while with Lutris they are in the same environment. And two: with Steam you don't actually own any games, unlike Lutris, which is just a manager of the games you actually own.

Yea fortunately I have never had an issue that changing proton versions would not fix, though I am interested since your good with lutris if perhaps you would have some insight to a problem I am having? Basically I use Lutris for Battle.net and EA App and have played Warcraft 3 Reforged as well as Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor flawlessly simply from the installer scripts for the application. The one game I have not had luck with is through The Rockstar Games Launcher with GTA SAN ANDREAS the Definitive Edition. Funnily enough when installing the Rockstar Game Launcher through Proton the game had zero issues, but with that app you have to run background services and Lutris allows those to run in tandem vs the steam way of running one exe at a time. So basically in Lutris with the Rockstar game Launcher and that game the character rubber bands terribly on foot especially when walking sideways and I have not been able to find any information online about it. Of course I changed settings in Lutris and in Game and tested many things but I could never get it to go away. I dont know if you would be able to help me with this issue or not, if not of course I can always play the Original through steam but I really enjoy the Definitive Edition and how buggy it used to be added a lot to the charm of the experience to me.

I think it's because you're on AMD, I heard they're working very well on Linux. I've thought about getting a distro myself because in some games it performs up to 10% better. Not going to use it for most things, but 10% is quite large for me. I have a 7900XT.

What is the easiest, user friendly distro for people who just want to use steam without any hassle, online browsers and nothing else? I'm not looking for a full OS that I'm gonna use permanently, just something that's exclusive to gaming. I once tried ubuntu and didn't know how to install anything lol, so I need steam and audio-drivers pre-installed. I guess I'll somehow manage to install AMD drivers on it, but I really want nothing else to do with it.

I've used numerous distros over the last two decades. Easiest one to use is by far Linux Mint. Just watch a few set up guides on YT, make sure you verify the ISO, make sure you turn on the firewall, and set up Time shift for OS snapshots. Linux is almost impossible to stuff up in 2025 unless you're using some niche or elitist distro.

The only difficulty I've had with Linux gaming is mods, and cloud saves (due to file structures/extensions), and occasional audio issues requiring minor workarounds.

Try it out. You won't regret it. Once you start using Linux you'll wonder why you ever used Windows

Tbh I am not sure, I never played any of Rockstar games and didn't use their launcher too. Since you installed it and it runs, I am going to assume the version of the launcher is the recommended version in Lutris. What you can try and do is change the wine version and dxvk version and see if that helps. Since the game is old, maybe an older version would work. Or perhaps running it with a proton wine would work. You can also try and restrict cpu cores and disable vsync and such. Manually set environment to 32 bit and also you are likely to need dgvoodoo2 enabled.

Alrighty my friend, thank you for the insight! Thanks for being a fellow Linux user, and thank you for being kind. It is people like you that make Linux digestible vs coming at it from an elitist standpoint. With more people out there like us who are just kind and helpful I really believe this will continue to grow. Btw I stream Linux Gaming content every night, feel free to pop in sometime my friend! https://www.youtube.com/@n0viewers409

Any way to disable the two pop up messages when launching the game? On Bazzite I get a graphics card driver warning and a message about the game being made for Windows. Not the worst thing in the world but annoying it always pops up.

I had the stuttering Issues on Linux Mint the first couple of days after release. But then it stopped. Maybe a steam/driver/game update? Now performance on Linux is great and stutters disappeared completely

probably just shaders were compiled and cached.

Yea generally speaking the Shader Comp in Linux happens before I launch the first time but sometimes I will get the occasional stutter. I dont know if you had precompile shaders option enabled in the steam settings but it helps with stuff like that :)

If you enable pre-caching of shaders, steam will keep downloading "updates" over and over - the pre-compiled shaders from others. And also can send over your shaders to other people (which it says so right above the option). And if you enable vulkan background processing, Steam will load your GPU when you are not even gaming and make it compile shaders.

Fortunately I have a modern computer unaffected by such afflictions, if it makes the gaming experience better for me and others then I am down for it. Not to mention I never get shader downloads in steam unless I launch or install a game or restarting my pc, simultaneously it is always more or less instantaneous and greatly improves the gaming experience in modern games. Considering Linux is mostly all about community then I actually think this is an awesome optional feature, regardless it does make shader comp stutter much less of an issue in many games so in my mind it is a win win but if thats something someone would not like then at least it is optional and disabled out of the box.
