This game is INCREDIBLE in Linux!
To anyone who may be considering running this game under linux I must say my experience has been perfect. I have not encountered a single stutter or noticeable frame drop in my time playing. Not only does the game look and run incredibly well on my RX7600 8GB GPU, Ryzen 5 7600 8 C0re 16 Thread CPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM @6400MHZ, and a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro NVME SSD, but I did not have to change or do a single thing to the game for the experience I have had. Simply click install if you have Proton 9.0-4 set for all Steam games in the settings, or you can manually select it in the properties of the game and eureka, you are ready to go. I would say if for some reason you did run into an issue that trying Proton Glorious Eggrole would probably be your best bet. I am running Garuda M0kka Linux btw with an up to date Linux (ZEN) Kernel as well as up to date MESA Drivers and KDE Desktop! I hope you guys all have the same wonderful experience I have and if not be sure to let me know so I can help in any way that I can :)

Linux gaming PC 2025, we have a few month left on windows 10
W linux
Mine occasionally stutters and I had one crush. But I doubt it's because of Linux. It runs very well overall, I can't really complain.

Is it running Vulkan natively or dxvk?

The game is using direct x for backend... You might be able to force vulkan if you tinker some, but I don't care to. It works fine inside proton.
I think it's because you're on AMD, I heard they're working very well on Linux. I've thought about getting a distro myself because in some games it performs up to 10% better. Not going to use it for most things, but 10% is quite large for me. I have a 7900XT.

What is the easiest, user friendly distro for people who just want to use steam without any hassle, online browsers and nothing else? I'm not looking for a full OS that I'm gonna use permanently, just something that's exclusive to gaming. I once tried ubuntu and didn't know how to install anything lol, so I need steam and audio-drivers pre-installed. I guess I'll somehow manage to install AMD drivers on it, but I really want nothing else to do with it.

If you don't want to learn how to install things or tinker a little, you should not be trying Linux, if I am honest. Most "gaming" distros end up breaking later on with updates and you are always better of installing a base distro and just installing what you want on it. And you will need, more often than not, tinker with games a bit + the save files are going to be in a strange location. Don't do it.
Wasn't Linux the white dude who review pc stuff?

I remember having used Solus OS many years ago briefly because my Windows got bricked due to my SSD malfunctioning, it was a popular distro at that time. I needed a temporary replacement, and Solus ran purely via my USB stick, so I thought why not?

Installing stuff was a nightmare for somebody going in blind, the file system and installing files was not user-friendly at all.

I had to go somewhere in the system and put in some command code for installing stuff and even download repos (or whatever it was called) to even be able to do so. It wasn't like opening an exe. I still had to download some files but even then I had to input some code.

From the top off my head, I'd need to install internet (if not on by default), audio-interface , video drivers, dualsense firmware and steam. Surely even I could do it? How long does one have to study to get these basic things right at least? Like I said, I'm not using it as my primary OS, just as a pure-gaming one. Now that I think about it, I wonder if dual-boot works.

Oh well, maybe you can help me out if you're interested lol.

Which gpu are you using? Mine is 1070 ti and it's not even launching. Showing something went wrong

CachyOS is pretty much set up with everything you need to run and play stuff on steam.
It has been my current for months after a few months of distro hopping.
Came all set up out the box with minimal faffing.

I have 2080. It does pop-up with a message about drivers in proton, but launches fine. Try changing the proton version - that often resolves my launching issues, but sometimes I need to restart Steam too for it to take effect. Other than that, providing launch arguments like -dx11 might help too.

That must have been 20 years ago, I remember at that time drivers were more of an issue. Nowadays most drivers get installed by default, unless you have some weird exotic hardware with no support.
Anyway, I have no issue giving you distro name that I would recommend: Pop!_OS, Linux Mint, Manjaro.
These would be something to try. They also have a gui-based app installation stores, so you wouldn't necessarily need to open a terminal. You can almost always install Steam very easily. But like I said before, you still might need to tinker, like selecting a proper version of proton or add launch options to the game.

Yea it is incredible how far Linux has come, Garuda M0kka has been serving me well and Steam in particular is just a dream to manage my games with in Linux! I even use it to install HoyoPlay for Zenless Z0ne Zer0 because the compatibility and ease of us with Steam and Proton is just next level, even better in my experience than using Lutris or Bottles to do similar things. Valve knocked it out of the park :)

Yea, it is very easy to manage games in Steam, but I prefer Lutris tbh. Because it has settings I can change and I often do. Like selecting the number of cores for a game that might not run well if there are more than 1 or 2 and there are other things I often find myself changing. In proton it's much harder to do and you need to actually fire up a terminal and manually switch wine prefix in some cases. Not too long ago I had to manually install some .net thing for the game and it was a hassle on steam.
