How to backstab on controller?

I may have skipped the tutorial notification on how to backstab to change some graphical settings.

I still can't figure it out, though. What am I missing? I've tried walking up and attacking with light or heavy, pushing L in, pushing R in, asking the game politely...

The right face button, B/O depending on your gamepad. That is how you perform brutal strikes by default. Brutal strikes are what the game calls backstabs and exhaustion punishes.

So far what I'm gathering from these replies is that it is indeed one of the buttons on the controller...

On my xbox one controller it's the red B button

I think you can't really backstab in this game, but you do instead a "Brutal Attack" when the enemy resistance bar is depleted and a red dot appear on him. You need to push B or the equivalent for PlayStation controller(I suppose it will be the circle). Be careful since some bosses can do the same to you XD

You have to slow walk up to them while locked on until it turns red then press B.
