In particular for this game near each of the bosses in the demo there is a possible grinding loop and doing one loop will give you more lacrima than fighting the boss 5 times and almost beating him. So no, it won't make over leveled or give you any big advantage.
And if you don't want the XP, then go and jump off a cliff and lose it forever.
So your claim that "it doesn't matter" how bad you are is completely false, since the xp return is milestone-based.
Oh no, the game actually incentivises you to go in and LEARN THE DAMN FIGHT instead of rambling around for hours and hours making sure you're 1000% ready! The absolute horror! A game that wants you to play it instead of wasting your time. How awful, really.
It's pretty simple, devs: If you can't implement RPG mechanics into your game in a meaningful way, then DON'T, you are only insulting the concept of RPGs by doing so.
Gaining some amount of experience for attempting a boss where I gain experience by performing a task absolutely make sense. You get the experience as you progress through levels in a same way. Why would it not happen on the boss?
I do not care about lost experience instantly returning to you as I would normally in a souls-like go to a boss encounter with no stored experience. However, since we are getting experience in during boss encounter in Khazan, it would be counter-intuitive to immediately lose it upon death.
games like these need to be rewarding to work well
obviously people will complain and get bored faster if they feel like they don't get much for beating all these enemies
you can just not pick up the xp you know
You're going to need it. The stat boosts you get from stuff are super minor BUT definitely important. And everything is tuned to be like a superboss. So every bit counts. You will never trivialize the game.
