The First Berserker: Khazan

The First Berserker: Khazan

For the DFO fans mad it's not Project BBQ, or the people who think it's just another Soulslike...
Watching a recent interview with the devs, it's clear they are using the deep lore of DFO as a jumping off place to flesh out and further build out their universe but in an intentionally different genre designed to appeal to the tastes of the broader consumer base.

DFO is a side scrolling-ish hack and slash type game. This is a modern action rpg.

Complaining about how the combat is different than a DFO berserker is like complaining that there isn't platforming puzzles in Mario Kart. They are using the same IP but branching off into a completely different style of game...which is cool!

Likewise for the people who claim it's "just another Soulslike" or that it's just "parry to win"...

1. The devs have said from the beginning that it's NOT really a Soulslike despite some superficial similarities.

Yes it uses stamina, and animation locked attacks, with xp corpse runs, and enemies reset at bonfire save points.

In that I concur that they took a baseline inspiration from the Souls mechanics, which are popular because they added an element of tactical consideration in combat, forcing you to think rather than button mash.

However Souls combat is typically methodical and slow. You get a light attack, a heavy, and a charge attack per weapon.

2. The devs have said from the beginning that the game starts out like a Soulslike but then as you advance the game gets faster....MUCH faster, and rather than have a multitude of weapons with only 3 attacks, here we see advanced skilltrees with binary decision points allowing for a WIDE variety of playstyles even with "only" 3 weapons. The devs chose a quality over quantity route which I for one think is great.

In this way the game also takes inpsiration from God of War 2018, where you have 3 weapons with skill trees to explore and build your own preferred playstyle.

3. Lastly, again they did take inspiration a bit from the regain mechanics of Bloodborne and the parry focus of Sekiro, but unlike the latter, Khazan isn't FORCED into a parry style whereas in Sekiro, it was git gud at parries or give up.

Khazan can go for perfect parries (imho very satisfying to pull off), OR can focus on dodging, with a very cool afterimage effect and a dedicated stance skill tree for the spear to emphasize dodging.

OR...you can go straight up aggression, charging and murdering foes before they even have a chance to react.

There is SO much versatility in how you approach the game, it is WAY faster and provides more true variety than any other Soulslike game and is best described as being inspired by/a hybrid of Souls/God of War combat in a DFO lore world with heavy inspiration from Berserk.

4. ALL video games have been derivative (at worst) or iterative (at best), as the medium has evolved, and I think this is a fantastic example of the latter, remixing their inspirations and giving them their own original twists...just like all art attempts to do.

I had an awesome time with the demo and the 24th can't come soon enough...

Thank you for sharing that, I'd not seen that!

But I noticed a couple things...that is an online game not a single player game. Almost MMO-ish.

I'm glad they decided to focus on a single character. It might be cool if they went the Darksiders route and made 4 games with different characters then a big team up game after it all.

Second I noticed the game looked easy. The trailer was nonstop the player just whooping enemies, which makes them seem not that dangerous.

I can nonstop whoop enemies in this demo too. Also, I don't care if they made it an MMO or transitioned it to single player, I prefer it to this demo either way.

You're just misinformed it seems.

Project BBQ's Berserker is miles better than what we got here.

Khazan looks like a down-grade from BBQ in all respects.

Was BBQ more ambitious? Of course.

Does Nexon hate taking risks and being innovative with all future IPs? YES.

Fair enough. I concede (rare on these boards I'm sure).

Whay you showed looked awesome, but not having any of those preconceived expectations, Khazan is already shaping up to my GOTY. Had a blast with the demo, love the art style and enemy design, and the combat slaps (imho).

i will admit,at first, i was realy mad over the loss of project BBQ. After playing the demo and having fun wth it, i us sad we oulnt get khazan AND bbq...

This is actually a continuation of BBQ, as is evident from the unreal engine project file and even the real executable for the game `BBQ-Win64-Shipping.exe`, all they did was scrap the concept and reused the project itself.
