FOR EVERYBODY HAVING BLACK SCREEN/ERROR ISSUES
Been having the same problems until I ran the standard troubleshooting windows program.
Set compatibility to Windows XP SERVICE PACK 2 and DISABLE VISUAL THEMES.
Given that I tried every gosh darn option in the threads, I figure this will work for someone.

Let me know in the comments if it worked, we need to get this game going before Steam sees a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and pulls the game. Whether the experience has left you sour or the lack of support and progress has made you skeptical, believe me - this game is a jewel and is worth your time.

It didn't work for me, sadly :<

EDIT -->
THIS worked for me:
- RUN as WINDOWS SERVICE PACK 2
- ENABLE 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
- Enable 'Run this program as an administrator'

Goodluck!

^ glad to see this fix is (partially) helpful. I think the most important bit is using Service Pack 2, not 3.

This is a new problem we haven't seen before. Is this on Windows 8.1, or what?

having the same issue, running windows 7. Tried AppelKaneel's instructions and still getting black screen. The game used to work before.

Turning off ShadowPlay on GeForce Exp fixed the issue for my system. If you have an Nvidia card and have ShadowPlay on try turning it off, did not need to turn on any compat. fixes.

For me it was on Win7 x64. Quickly browsed through the threads and then I used the regular troubleshoot function.

Update the thread when you make some progress!

AHA! adding -windowed to steam launch fixed the issue. once in the game doing alt-enter puts it back to fullscreen. its more of a work around but it works 100%. I also did the compatablility stuff as well so it might be both.

also holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ this game is good. I find most games easy and boring and puzzles too simple. this game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blows my mind.

Several years later, I know. But none of the previous fixes worked for me in Windows 10. What I did to fix it is to add -windowed to the shortcuts target. (Right click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab > Should have this in it: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Braid\braid.exe" -windowed

Path will be different if installed using Steam. If so, in Steam on Braids properties > Launch options. Add -windowed

Run it, then click Alt and Enter to get it to fullscreen.
