Mechanics in fickle companion

Hey,
can someone explain the game mechanics in world 4-7 fickle companion? I understand that the key traces the way it previously went when I go back, but sometimes it just randomly falls on the ground and I can't quite understand why or how. I am struggling to get the puzzle piece in the middle of the map, but I don't want to look for a walkthrough as I still want to figure out the puzzle myself.

It basically follows your previous path to the right unless it is being held by a monster. The mechanics aren't explained well, but you have to steal the key from the monster while on a ladder, without getting killed by the monster.

Necroing this thread to say THANK YOU. I spent so long trying to figure this one out. It seems like they patched it from the first time I played through this, as you used to be able to jump on the monster and pick up the key, but now the key will just teleport out of reach. Rushing to the second latter and moving upwards just as the key is grabbed let me finally get this piece.
