Can't do anything in this game!

Is this game going to open up at some point and let me go places outside of the main quest? I reached Martira town and still I am not allowed to do side missions. I am enjoying the game but getting slightly annoyed with its rigid structure and the lack of freedom of choice.

If i remember correctly you can do side missions already in Martira, check the recruitment center for bountys, and always look the "!" icons on the map + some side quests can only be done if you reach a certain level of royal virtue ( in Martira where you meet "Cuculus", the blue haired guy he only opens up if you have Imagination +2 ), and this method gona continue later on, so try to level up some royal virtues when you have free time ^^, hope this helps a little, have an awesome day

There's two bounties (One before the Sandworm Nest for Goborns and one after for Valmo), a fetch quest to buy from a village shop, Cuculus the blue-haired Nidia in the hat, and the two Requests for the second half of the Catacombs back in Grand Trad (On on the main street south of Brigitta's usual spot, the other at the entrance to the Catacombs themselves).

That's more than enough. You gotta actually walk around and talk to the folk. Every time you get a new city and a new deadline, you should be making a lap around to pick up requests from everywhere. Just check your map and look for the exclamation marks, stop by the bounty boards, and gather as much information as possible. The game does open up, but you gotta actually opt into it rather than simply keeping the blinders on.

None at the moment. Have plenty of side quests in the log book but the game is forcing me to do that main quest related bounty (knight bounty). Every time I try to do side exploration and move to a side quest, I am told by NPC companion that you "cant' do this", "can't go there", "now is not the time for that". Kind of frustrating that is.

Certain days are hard-requirements for certain tasks. For you, it's time to go to the Sandworm nest, no ifs/ands or buts. There's Deadline Dungeons such as 'Complete this in X days' such as with Grand Trad's dungeon, and then there's times like this where it's instead 'Prepare for X in Y days' where the deadline IS the event rather than a simple timer.
