Haven’t tried AutoHDR with this title but I’ve rarely been pleased with its results so I stopped enabling it in general.
I wound up using special-k for this and the Persona games. I start with a baseline as explained here https://wiki.special-k.info/HDR/Retrofit then tune slightly to taste.
I haven’t tried the RenoDX mod yet as I wasn’t aware of it. It looks interesting however so I will check it out
By comparison, Special-k's HDR (using pipeline remastering as well) needs to be pulled in quite a bit.
After adjustment I would up with similar overall brightness and contrast for the scene, though my Special-k config feels like it's still expanding the the overall dynamic range more. I slightly prefer the look of it which is totally down to personal taste especially after so much adjustment.
The RenoDX mod has a big advantage in being able to control the UI brightness separately though.
What did you change your settings to with RenoDX?
Preset: Preset 1
Tone Mapper: ACES
Peak Brightess: 396 (my monitor tops out at 400 nits in HGIG mode)
Game Brightness: 233
UI Brightness: 160
Gamma Correction: On
Hue Correction: 50
Exposure: 1.06
Highlights: 70
Shadows: 0
Contrast: 54
Saturation: 67
LUT Stength: 60
Blowout: 0
Any form of auto HDR will mess up the artistic intent. (Wrong colors and contrast)
RenoDX isn't Auto HDR though, it's native apparently. Check the page on Nexus mods, there is a better explanation there
In particular, I favor mods that enable the game to make better use of my monitor's capabilities such as HDR and ultrawide.
I'm currently replaying FF VII right now and it's so modded up at this point the game is practically remade. Some incredible work happening in that community and it's made the game better than it ever was.
