Any point doing social links unprompted?
If someone wants to talk to me, I'll do their social link activity and level up the social link. But if someone doesn't want to talk to me, is there a reason to spend an activity with them?

You can if you want their specific reward earlier, like for Skill Slots/Class Upgrade/Economic perks. Generally the game won't let you 'waste time' with a Follower outside of the Gauntlet Runner for Wisdom/Courage/Imagination boosts. The Follower Voice thing you get off a Gallica upgrade is simply to remind the player that this Follower exists and is one of the few that can be checked at this point.

A small tip... If you go into the menu and select Followers it will show everyone available for link activities and let you fast travel to them. Seriously I got through most of the game before I even realised.

Yeah that's something else. If I open the followers list and press Go on one, it says something like "I don't hear anything", does that mean I need to wait for their prompt to talk?

To be clear, I've never done a social link activity unless Gallica tells me. I don't even know if you can?

This is a little more confusing than P5 where basically every social link activity gave me a rank up for that person, but only if they asked to hang out. Otherwise it was a wasted activity, you know?

Those that have a rank-up interaction available will have an icon next to their portrait. Red icon means you can go there right now and do it. If the icon is grey, it means it's available, but you cannot go do it right now. If you select that person, it will tell you what's preventing you from progressing. Common reasons are insufficient level in wisdom/eloquence/... , can only be done while travelling on the runner, or can only be done during the day/night

If there's no icon, you cannot progress them at the given point in the main story

Just to add to the above advice... Some may also not be available because you need to do a related side quest. It should be in the requests if that is the case or you may need to talk to them.
