Can i really not choose what my party levels, and only 1 of the 2 skill points for myslef?
Am i missing something, as this seems a rather unusual system.

You get to customize your MC, while your party members level in predetermined fashion.
What's unusual about that in a JRPG?

both points on the MC, or just the one? Thanks for the reply.

The difference is that it's much easier to level archetypes on the MC, if you so choose to devote time to it, which results in him having much higher stats across the board compared to other party members, as maxing an archetype also gives a boost to a stat specific to it (e.g/ mage gives +3 int, warrior gives +3 str etc.). So while the protag can feel a bit like a jack-of-all-trades for much of the story, eventually he becomes a complete powerhouse compared to other party members.
You can in a bit with incense later on.

When MC levels up, you choose a stat for one point, and the other is placed into a rotation of stats. In this way, the game allows you to guide your stat growth without making something too pointed; you don't run the risk of breaking the balance by getting overpowered early, nor the risk of creating an unviable build. It comes off as a little patronizing, but it ensures you're leveling more or less along the devs' design path. It's an olive branch, since you can't respec.

The other characters level entirely along a predetermined path. You cannot adjust their stat alignment.
