What happened to Atlus?
Not only they released a demo, but also 2 updates? Can someone check if they are ok?

Obviously they want to hype the game up.

Squeenix is also doing these prologue demo thing, which is a nice change.

Japanese devs as a whole seem to have grown up this past half-decade or thereabouts.

The likes of Square or Capcom "discovering" that the PC platform not only exists, but it's actually super popular and viable has been great to see (It only took some of these companies 25 odd years..:steamfacepalm:) and yeah Atlus actually responding to the performance issues and taking action is pretty unprecedented. Looks like they are really going all in for Metaphor.

Anyone know what this 2nd patch did by the way? Just more general performance improvements? I'm just using Special K which fixed pretty much everything on my end already.

Consoles are what most people play on in Japan but PC gaming is growing more, the steam deck is also selling well over there so I think more devs are taking PC porting and support seriously especially when the international market is taken into account who already have large audiences on PC.

Sony making barely any interesting games for the Japanese public (almost only open world slop for muricans) and upping the price of their console twice (!) in its life cycle is one of the reasons why the market share of the PC platform is progressing.

That too, all 3 of the console makers have been pathetic this generation but Sony especially have been awful. They basically completely ignore Japan now.

I'll be impressed if they actually implement UW support.

Also no on release DLC.

However long time atlus fans know the atlus cycle.

They don't want this game to fail. They are going all in.

The less conspiracy-laden, more boring answer that I've actually heard was that it was Covid.

Apparently PC's were... kind of non-existent in Japan up until recently.
Having a 'Family PC' or even just one as a gaming machine was unheard for whatever reason; then Covid forced a lot of the population to get Laptops/home computers for remote working and zoom etc. which inevitably led people to looking into things like Steam.

Whichever the case may be, I'm not complaining when it comes to seeing more stuff like this.

Indie games are popular on Steam in Japan. Coincidentally, the biggest Youtubers play on PC.

The PS5 was harder to find in Japan than anywhere else as Sony gave it lower stocks on release.

The PS5's prices are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.

Only a few interesting exclusives made for Japanese audience on the PS5.

Lack of marketing effort from Sony compared to Nintendo.

Limited time exclusives like FFXVI have virtually no support from Sony here and it was all up their own editors.

Reasons are various but most of them points to a neglect by Sony. The companies selling PS5 in Japan are Capcom, Square Enix and Bandai Namco. Not Sony.

Atlus is finally in peak soul mode.

I can't wait to finally play Metaphor. I would have played it, no matter what, but the reviews are basically "It's the Persona of fantasy RPG" hype.

The year 2024 is basically the year of Atlus in gaming.
