character models step down from p3r
anyone else kinda let down by the quality difference in models compared to p3r, i thought reload was going to be the new standard in the 3d models and graphics moving forward, a shame that atlus's brand new IP is being limited to their older engine and persona 5 graphics. still looks great tho!

idk, seems more of an art style choice than limitation. going for that vintage painting aesthetic.

I pretty much expected this. When Studio Zero (the team behind Metaphor) broke off from P-Studio (the team behind all the Persona games since 2006), they took a big chunk of their core staff with them. So while P-Studio was forced to reform their team and production pipeline from the ground up, which led to them experimenting with Unity (Persona 5 Tactica) and Unreal Engine (Persona 3 Reload), Studio Zero could comfortably keep their Persona 5 workflow. Which isn't always a good thing.

Reload will bring in the new standard of models when it comes to P-Studio and them most likely using UE as their main engine for games. Studio Zero will most likely hold onto using their Proprietary Engine which they are most used to. It's not bad at all in my opinion. As long as the make more modifications to the engine later down the line for say their next project after Metaphor (if there is one). I can imagine Persona 6's models will be a step up or very similar to Reloads

It's not a limitation, it's an art style choice. You may like it or not, but it was intentional

i would disagree, i'm not on about how they appear, u can quite clearly see a lower polygon count in the models faces compared to p3r and less animation in the face as a result. i highly doubt this is an artistic choice and is down to limitations.

i was more referring to facial expressions and polygon count :) rather than the art style which i love

You know it's also on the PS4 too right?
The same with persona 5, Persona 5 "looked" good due to its art direction, but it's the same as p5

It's not the models, it's the weird artsy-fartsy cel-shading they're doing. If you look at the cutscenes the models are super dynamic - I think they're WAY better than the Persona games. However, when you're just walking around the overworld, they can look pretty rough because of the shading color scheme. This is most obvious with Fabienne and Brigitta, who have very light and dark skin tones respectively, and it looks like their skin is entirely one color without a gradient or light shading.

I agree with the cell shading however i believe the models in p3r are far better expressively imo

I think the main characters model look fine, the non-important NPCs tho look PS2 tier.

p3r is on a better engine, this game was made on the older engine, AND is getting released for old gen and possibly switch.

regardless the game still looks really good, and anyone complaining is a culture lacking 4k meathead with no taste.

i still think the game looks great, just hoped the models would be p3r level just so the 3d cutscenes have the same emotional impact

No clue what you mean, OP.

Everything looks very similar in the model department.

But then again, this was made by a separate team.

facial geometry is a far improvement in P3r compared to metaphor with mouths and eyes having far more bones for animators to work with making them look more fluid.
