On the fence about the game

I am On the Fence as it where, about this game. On one hand it looks promising, the art style looks interesting. On the other the protagonist looks dull as hell and rather hyper androgynous. And 'Traveler' or whatever title isn't very promising for a person with an engaging story.

So can someone please tell me a bit more? Perhaps about the main character (without spoilers if possible). I've been going back and forth on rather or not to see acquisition of this game out.

Examples of Protags I like; Zidane (FF9), Squall (FF8), Lara Croft (Classic Series), Kain and Raziel (Legacy of Kain), Garalt of Rivia (Witcher), 2B (Nier Automata), Dante, Virgil, Nero (DMC), Father Nier (Nier Replicant).

Examples of Protags I dislike; 9S (Nier Automata), Brother Nier (Nier Replicant), Noctus (FF15), Bayonetta (Bayonetta).

The protag is the usual japanese protag, quiet, polite and kind heart but courageous when the time comes.
He isn't the talkative or bravado type, though you can choose dialogs to make him bravado or ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

If you've played persona 3,4, or 5 this Protag is pretty much identical to them.

A self insert type character who is the "cool quite type" (But despite not talking much is somehow a leader and can make friends easily.) With some dialog options varying between being a jerk to being very kind. (though usually the dialog you choose only impacts the next few sentences of dialog.)

These games are more about the secondary cast then the actual protagonist.

Also Traveler is just a temp name for like the first 10-15 minutes, before you get to name the protagonist whatever you want.

if you’ve played persona, you know generally what you’re in for. this protag has slightly more character because his lines are voiced, but not much. he can be a troll or an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for a single dialogue choice that affects nothing. he’s treated as the usual nice guy who’s brave and charismatic by everybody else.

there is an interesting plot twist with him deep into the game. it doesn’t change his character. what you see of him in the demo is generally what you’re going to get.

then, unlike the protagonists in your favorites list, they are all pretty much a blank slate. some (like joker) have more of their own personality, but in general, they are pretty dull. there might be a few story events that apply to them specifically, but they don't really get to have much of a reaction on account of being quiet protagonists.

these games tend to coast more off of the supporting cast than the protagonist.

JRPG's generally do not let you choose your alignment or give you choices to deviate from what the story is, or how your character acts. That's just how it is.

He speaks occasionally when you choose dialogue options but they're limited.

If you liked Squall, that's probably good enough. This protag talks more and is way more optimistic and not an introvert edgelord.

The character seems pretty mild. Typical anime game fare. The world is somehow heavily entrenched in this race-war mentality yet somehow he's completely above it all despite being one of the rarest races. He doesn't let it affect him and keeps a plucky idealistic attitude with the usual justice, equality and fairness tropes. It's bland, sure, but he's kind of the character you need to lead the team in these games.
