Question about the NPCs in battle

Is there anyway that we can make it so that we control only our character and let other party members decide their own tactics? Just like persona.

No, auto battle means party wide AI, not just anyone.

The game directly states in-game dialog that the protag is the team's captain and has direct commands over his teammates.

Yeah go to the Party setting in the Main Menu and you can set up tactics for the rest of your team mates. Wouldn't recommend it though, they'll burn through MP and use less than optimal moves against enemies. Plus once you're strong enough you can just outright *kill* enemies on the field(at three levels above them or higher) so you don't have to worry about grinding normal battles.

I tried doing that, but it doesnt really do anything until I turn on "auto battle" which means everyone is AI controlled.
