More important than a few stat points is a well-rounded group with archetypes that form as many synergies as possible.

Personally I'm focusing on magic for the protag. Mage is really nice for protag to use early on because their hero passive recovers 1 MP to all allies when you kill or stun something on the overworld. This is actually a huge deal because enemies respawn and you can just kill them infinitely in the overworld when you're a high enough level in relation to them meaning you have a reliable means of both grinding and topping MP off without having to leave the dungeon, meaning clearing main dungeons take fewer days to complete which means more time that can be allocated to virtues/companions in so forth which results in you becoming more powerful sooner.
Maybe Str based MC is most powerful but having an all Str crew is not.
The MC just feels like a mage too. Would not feel right making this twink character a strength build.
i’ve been using strohl as the only magic user of the party on hard and even he’s only used wind and light for three main dungeons now. this is one of the least magic dependent early-mid games i’ve ever played in an smt game.
