are you just saying anime boy bad?
The main character is the definition of a blank slate which is by far the best way to make the player emphasize with him. If he had more personality, he'd be WAY more devicive (and looking at how long this game is that could seriously ruin the experience for some).
Choosing "boring" over "risky" is sadly very adivsable in this situation.
I too hate how JRPGs always have the most barebones and boring protagonist who is also very generic black haired guy. Like give us a customizable main character instead if you aren't gonna give them a personality anyways.
I think the characters are only boring if you are boring.
SMT stands for Shin Megami Tensei (True Goddess Reincarnation), the core Atlus franchise.
I have been playing the demo now and this game seems to be in an even weirder category where you name the protagonist but can't choose their look, gender or anything. Their personality so far is definitely in the stick figure category though. The fairy with you has a personality so it's not like they are bad writers, I just don't get why JRPGs do that.
I will always preset character with a cool design over custom preset ones.
The protag definitely has personality, and I don't find him boring either, he has the typical japanese polite but actually kind of heart and courageous attitude.
The game itself is pretty good though, the companion characters are at least interesting.
there is never really any choice in them until it comes down to like The Moment in golden/royal, but otherwise you can play the entire game just saying the wrong thing and it continues.
Yeah it's super annoying - promising a new I.P. and just lazily dragging all faults of the old I.P.s along. Nowadays after tons of good games in which your choices matter, this is just a very lazy way of writing and it actively keeps me from enjoying some of the otherwise well directed cutscenes. If all my options basically boil down to "Yes, please!", I feel insulted in my base intelligence as a human being. I'd prefer if they'd drop their stupid windowdressing and not offer any choices if they don't matter anyways.
Also: I encountered an outragous moment in game in which they ask for your advice, you pick the second option and then your crew just overrules you. I swear I almost Alt+F4 out of the game bc. of how stupid that was.
