Thoughts on the story so far (30 hours in)
Overwritten. Nonsensical.

Too overtly political.

Needed a love interest introduced early on to ground it some more.

Too much hero-worshiping. None of the characters are three-dimensional. The only good guy with a flaw so far was the father of the little girl.

I suppose it's serviceable for a game of this genre. But only barely.

Video games used to be where you'd go to find interesting writing.

Seems like games have completely lost their edge these days.

From the beginning we said that it was not a persona, the character strives to become a sovereign, and I find that much more interesting than anything else.

wrow, the quest for the crown story has politics in it? who'd a thunk!

are you gonna tell me it has too many swords and knights next?

I would say a political story is the opposite of a story losing its edges but you have you.

Figured as much, it's why I got into game development. Since the industry is soulless and dead unlike when I was a kid.

30 hours for a game that came out under 24 hours ago? that could only happen if you played the demo and no-lifed for the 24 hours after that, and if you seriously didn't pick up the fact that it was going to be a political story based on that, it seriously seems like a you problem.

OP's own writing seems contradictory.

Apparently, it's too overtly political but you need a love interest to ground it? And this somehow means the writing lost its edges?

I haven't gotten that far yet, but I don't know what OP is having in mind.

I'm going to try not to get too in the weeds with how writing works...

Relying on politics as a main story engine creates a bias with those who have issues with politics (whether it's a particular stance or not caring about them at all).

Love, however, resonates with people. It's something most people have either experienced or have a desire to experience. Love is sexy and heartfelt. Politics are neither of those things.

Universal themes like love ground your story.

That's why family is always used (probably overused). Because everyone has one.

all stories are polarizing, trying to say romance is always accepted is as silly as saying that a war for the crown game shouldn't be political.

love, very much, isn't universal, very few things are.

Not sure where you gather your info from, but you should google what the most universal theme in storytelling is.

Op, I think you're too illiterate to appreciate the themes of the story. May I suggest call of duty instead?

I know what they are.

What I said is that it needed to be augmented with a love story.

For a game like this, milquetoast fantasy political intrigue by itself isn't enough.

What are some of your favourite stories in games?
Trying to gauge whether to buy this or not.

Then you're not old enough. Games in the 80/90s had crap stories, that were an afterthought. I'll just highlight this though "The only good guy with a flaw so far was the father of the little girl." >>> don't know... he didn't last long enough for me to get a real feel for him. But on the other hand: he introduce the concept of "it can happen" early on.

moreso you should understand your own bias influences your perception.

not everyone likes romance either, it is a common theme no doubt, but it can turn people away much like "politics" is, difference being: this game is about said politics, so its silly to complain about it.

Wonder if the orignal game is like this, or if this is just the localizer mistranslating things as usual. Would need someone who understands japanaese to confirm.
