Boredom mostly. The dungeons in this game are every bit as big as Persona 5's. AI makes it a little more interesting. They can and will synergize (to the point that they'll pass up turns so that the next party member can use a synthesis skill). SMT games have had good AI since Persona 4.
OP's question was about having a setting similar to Persona's "Free Will" for each party member. My answer is that it technically exists, but in a very inconvenient form, you have to toggle auto-battle off/on every turn and you can't set different tactics for each party member.
Thank you for answering the question
I'm with you. I don't wanna act like someones fuzzy mom, managing their every skill, I wanna feel like I'm part of a competent team. If they add party AI, or someone makes a mod for it, I'm buying the game at once, but for now, hard pass. Controlling all of your team is sooooo boring.
I loved the combat in P5R P3R DQ11 and I would always let a.I control companions to make it more interesting.
