Heismay
I don't like Heismay. I know we are saving the kingdom (or at least the Prince) and all so we are taking any help we can get but still. I just got him, and I already want to stick him back in his cave. If there was somebody else I could swap him out with he would just be hanging out in my vehicle all the time. Also his archetype doesn't seem to fit with his character.

Atlus has a habit of putting in these mascot characters but at least Teddy was kind of funny and Morganna changed into a bus. All Heismay manages to do is get on my nerves.

Anyway, that was my rant thanks for listening.

Asking about dodge tanking, this is basically him still staying Thief but with the skills Knight's Proclaimation for enemies to focus fire on him right?
The Gunner line also has high AGI if you just want to stick him in the back rows. Give him Knight Proc, Masukukaja, either Dekunda or Dekaja, the accessory that make enemies lost all Press Turns when they missed and viola.
Haven't gotten the last accessory yet but I have all the former.

Now I will keep Hulkenberg from being the party's punching bag :)

You're right about the archetype, though. Thief is kind of an awkward approximation of his skills that's not really appropriate. He's very clearly designed as more of a ninja type.

It is the ninja type. Quite literally.
Literally indeed. IIRC the progression is Thief > Ninja > Assassin... Though the Royal Archetype is Royal Thief, but that matches the naming scheme for the others too.
Thief > Assassin > Ninja

So I just finished the Kriegante castle and first arc where you meet Heismay.
Tbh I initially thought "oh no a meme character like in all those animes"
But they manage to create an awesome character, I love him.
He's simultaneously:
- A badass Ninja/Samurai with insane skills
- An older man and father
- A CUTE BAT (I was dying of laughter when he was making bread by stepping on the dough with his little paws).
- Also the way his son died and the entire relationship and reason for his exile are relatable.
- Finally he's clearly the "Japanese" character (his entire gear and culture is basically Bushido/Japan) which is hilarious that they made the bat character the Japanese one lol.

My thoughts exactly.

There is a lot of references to Asians culture being the oppressed tribes in the game (I think the mustari is based on Hindu or Buddhist mythology due to their third eye).

What I don't like the most about him is his design. I'm pissed we get his silly looking ass over a cool Rhoag one (they're probably saving it for the DLC but still...).
He also is very much useless in combat as he comes inherintely with a high Agility stat. And the problem with that is his starting Archetypes aren't the debuff/buffing type so you'll need to invest some MAG into him. Junah who joins right after fixes all those problems, making him an irrelevant bench warmer.
I did like his bond though it was pretty heartwarming.

tl;dr: bad design, bad at combat, good bond -> one of the worst companions
Serioulsy i never see him having a bad damage in general, with a good katana on him.
HIs Abyssal Blade is perfect to in the same action put a good debuff in the enemie, and give a good damage.

We did get a cool Rhoag party member. Louis killed him.

So far I don't see him as having bad damage.
Plus he has single hit attacks, and his synthesis I have is AOE with dark damage which many enemies are vulnerable too. Add to the fact that he has high agility and can dodge tons of attacks. He's a very good character IMO.

I do agree that Grius was a good character.
However I can't imagine the story with him alive, I feel that Maria being orphaned adds lots to the story for some reason and the link we have with her. I wish that Grius had been characterised differently, maybe being a lone mercenary or something.

Let me clarify. I fully agree that the story would not be the same if Grius lived. However, if we can consider Shinjiro a party member in P3, Grius gets the same consideration from me, and he is Rhoag. So even if it is only for a short while, we get a Rhoag party member.

On the topic of Heismay, I absolutely love him. His design is appealing, while his bond story is handled very well, and despite what expectations his design sets, he is very much not a mascot character in the way that Teddie and Morgana were, and that's a breath of fresh air, as much as I liked Ted and Mona in Persona too.
mono_sloth Oct 26, 2024 @ 7:13pm
But! Heismay is Batman. Manbat. Bat of Human Like Proportions! How could you hate on Heismay? He's literally if Atlus made their own version of Manbat. His archetype fits him perfectly. You just big mad cause you ain't Batman. And he is Manbat. ppffffftttttttt.
Kapika96 Oct 27, 2024 @ 5:59am
I love him! He's from the only original race in the game (Hulkenberg is just an elf, Strohl a horny human etc.) so he wins points on that alone!

His archetype fits too if you think about it. He was a shadow knight, made to the all the dodgy underhanded things that the standard knights couldn't be associated with. So yeah, theft and murder and stuff like that. Doesn't really fit his personality, but that's the only real job he could get due to his race, so it's what he had to do and what he became good at.

Huh I never thought about it that way
TheOnceUnknown Oct 28, 2024 @ 6:51pm
In terms of gameplay, he tends towards agility and the only meaningful effect of that is a higher chance to dodge, but you can either dode or use sturdy stance to half all damage all the time, and very late game you can get the repel physical or repel magic accessories from the level 88 teeth whereupon dodging is less effective than repel always. Lastly, the 7th combat character gives strength and outdoes heismay in every way except arriving late. Overall, he was a holdover until the 7th character where character 5 and 6 are more magic based which is less effective than gold rush/attack.

Why do you dislike/hate him?
