Personally I specced all into STR and I manage even when I have to use magic because the enemy is resistant or repels phys.
Edit: you know what I'm upset about though, that I missed on free luck stat points because if you use the toilet on the runner on Idlesday (Sunday) you get +1 luck. Literally my heart sunk. All that luck unclaimed.
also im pretty sure the merchant is used only in overworld combat as stunning and killing enemies outside of battle gives a bunch of money. like 400 money for a blue enemy that gets 1tapped.
but the upgraded merchant might be strong in its attack skill, would not know as i havent tried
if you're on normal, your stats honestly do not matter as much as you think, your archtype gives a large chunk of them to the stats you need, and that can carry you most of the way.
Also remember you have inheritance slots. Funnily enough having a magic build in a Merchant or Brawler isn't as crazy as it sounds. You can use the inheritance slots for magical attacks, and since the archetype's inherent skills all utilise something other than MP you're not completely useless should you run out.
Merchant doesn't grant strength or magic though, just endurance, luck and agility.
They mean a trainer as in software like cheat engine; it's a term leftover from MS-DOS days where a seperate program would be included usually with a filename like <gamename>trainer.exe (Doomtrainer, Hexentrainer, princetrainer etc etc) to serve as a "sandbox" mode of the game with stuff like invincibility or endless resources turned on by default.... or in case of RPG's the ability to respec anywhere, anytime.
