I tried to beat him at level 9/10 with the starting Archetypes but it didn't work, you have to adapt to your enemies.
Pretty sure using taunt doesn't stop him from using AoE's. Or any boss for that matter.
Bosses can still use AOE attacks just fine; I'm pretty sure taunt effects don't change their internal move priority, just the target of their single target moves.
Maybe it has just been a string of coincidences, but the amount of standard attacks bosses use when I'm actively using knight's proclamation feels much higher than without. But I haven't bothered with longer tests, so it's possible it's not a real thing. They do occasionally use AOEs still, regardless, but it just feels much reduced with the taunt active.
