Missing subtitles
So I'm playing the game in Japanese audio with English subtitles, but I've noticed I miss a lot of small talk, for example when characters attack in combat, or things that they say after an interaction don't have any speech bubble or subtitles appear, and I don't speak Japanese so have no idea what they are saying...

Is there a way to fix this?

Unfortunately not, if you know 0 japanese you will just miss on those. To be fair the things they say in combat are very simple if you are learning and played other persona games (and they are 90% of what is unsubbed in game), it is usually things related to the type of attack you will use like "the power of purification!" or something like "let it bright up!", a couple of the top of my head when using light magic etc etc.

But if you are not a learner and you find that immersion breaking you might just want to try it in english.

If you are a learner, this is a bad game for that purpose anyway, since it uses dub-titles (the subtitles from the English audio track), which are significantly different from the spoken Japanese dialogue.

It's the reason I couldn't get very far in the game - I know enough Japanese to understand the overwhelming majority of what is being said, and the subtitles being completely off from that gives me a serious headache. But I also don't want to miss anything, so I can't turn them off entirely (I play all English games with subtitles on as well), and my Kanji repertoire is still at the elementary school level.

I really hate that they cheaped out on not putting in a proper sub track - Japanese-English translators/dialogue localization people get paid in pennies as is, even I could technically afford to pay for it, so in the grand scheme of things, it would have been a rounding error in their budget.

Instead, I'm left with either not playing what seems to be a genuinely great game, or playing the English localization, which is just legitimately painful if you're used to watching anime/playing JRPGs/etc in Japanese, as it sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon impression of the original, and you can't help but notice how heavily localized and different from the source everything is from the language, expressions, etc used.

*Sigh*

I miss the days when the fansubbing community was still active. Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm sick, and somehow, fevers always get me ranting like an old man yelling at clouds.
