There was some room with black mist that is locked like midway through as well.
Yeah the door with the black mist is a boss fight. When you get to Martira (next town you visit after Gran Trad) clear the quest from the wanted posters there, it's the imps Den or something, after y you deliver that, two new quests regarding the mausoleum will unlock back at Grand Trad, one of them involves that door.
What you would have found in the smoke room is: A fight with several zombies that rewards you with the key to the locked treasure chest
What you would have found in the treasure chest is: A key that moves the giant golden statue and allows you to get to the treasure chest you couldn't reach in the statue room
What you would have found in the statue room is: Mage/Cleric armor with 100 defence, Magic +3, and 15% Dark evasion.
It's nice, but equipment from the next dungeon is always going to be stronger than the best stuff you can find in the current dungeon.
