Is this a sequel or prequel to Arkham Origins?
Should I play it before or after?

It's not a prequel or a sequel. Somehow it is a story in parallel. So it doesn't matter if you play it before or after. Nonetheless you should be warned that the game play is quite different from the other episodes.

Thank you. But what do you mean by "quite different from the other episodes"? Which episode!!!?

I mean the other episodes of the Batman Arkham series : Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham City and Batman Arkham Origins.

This game takes place ~3 months after AO.

Arkham series chronological order:

1st - Arkham Origins
2nd - Arkham Origins: BLACKGATE (follows the story right after Origins ended with the villains inside Blackgate prison)
3rd - Arkham Asylum
4th - Arkham City
5th - Arkham Knight

so if you wanna follow the story in the chronological order this is it (also there are some comics in the middle of each game, ex: Batman Arkham City - End Game, which follows the events post Arkham City, Batman burning Jokers body and dealing with his death

Origins Blackgate takes place 3 months after Origins, but it won't spoil much of the story for you. So you can technically play the games in any order. Some things would make more sense when you play Origins first though, which I recommend.

Nooooup. You're confused there. It's exactly a sequel to Origins and the events of origins are often mentioned on this game. The very first cutscene mention events AO as things that happened 3 months ago.

Don't forget about "Assault on Arkham" takes place before Asylum. :steamhappy:

There has been confirmed (by Arkham Knight) to be about an 8 year gap between Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum. So a lot of stuff happens in between them. :P

That said, Assault on Arkham is a good movie, but if you go into it expecting a Batman movie you'll be disappointed. It's actually a Suicide Squad movie. Batman has a minor part in it.

Agreed good movie but not a batman movie persay. I'd say Batman has a larger role than minor, but he is not hte main character.

Sounds like plenty of time to make some more Batman games. :) I can't get enough of these.
