If you kill multiple enemies with the same trail, it racks up points extra fast. If I recall, killing each trio of basic-♥♥♥♥♥ red chaser ships will net you a thousand points. As long as you fly away from the enemies, you are creating a single continuous beam that the AI has no choice but to fly into. Just rethink your strategy. You can also strafe the edges of the screen to hit enemies just as they emerge.

i finally beat it after an hour or so. the trick was to NOT pick up more than 2 trail-edge upgrades. only go for the speed/thickness/damage upgrades and its quite easy
