If you disable shoplifters you need to restart the game, i have it off, yes i had to buy the bat, and yes you have to hit one person just as a demo on how it works, after that have not seen a shoplifter and did not had to attack anybody.
Supermarket Together has an in-game jail.
I had to start a new game cause my old one was acting up after all the recent updates, but thats par for the course with early access. I didn't have any guards and I disabled shoplifters but it was still listing 'buy a bat' and 'chase away shoplifter with bat' as "objectives" I needed to complete to progress. Why give people the option to disable them if you still have to use them to progress? I just want to run a nice market. Price and place goods. Sell them and restock and decorate my store. I play video game simulators to escape the cruelness in the world, especially nowadays. Even in the real world, assaulting shoplifters with baseball bats would get you arrested so thats not even realistic. To be fair though, I really like that they added produce and that they are adding online orders and deliveries. Thats the kind of realism I like.
