Accidentally moved checkout counter

I hired a cashier and was busy packing the shelves. I noticed the line got long and people were complaining about the line being full. So, I tried to interact with the cash register to take over, but couldn't find an option to do so. I held down the mouse button to interact, and it picked up the entire cash counter to place around. All the customers got up and left the store, and I could not figure out at all how to exit the counter placement. It kept showing green or white, that I could place the counter, but would not let me place it. I resolved it by just exiting the game (without saving to avoid any issue).

If you only have one register and one cashier, you have to fire the cashier through the computer in order to ring up items yourself again. Personally, I wait to hire cashiers until I've rung up the number of customers needed to hire all four cashiers. It's not a huge number and doesn't take that long to do.
