Since RDR1 is 200% gta: Wild West Edition, but pretends to have plot (It's way more action packed but still suffers from that typical houser writing), maybe?

Sure Rd2 has decent plot and characters but Its %100 slower than gta V and has a lot more mandatory sidejobs?

I'm older and a fan of the old 60s and 70s westerns and this checks that tick box perfectly. The paraphrase answer would be rdr is a spaghetti westernesqe linear story with a some token side quests and events. The map isn't quite as large as in rdr2 but its still very well detailed and each zone is distinct. In contrast rdr2 is basically gtav with horses and can be just as corny and surreal at times. Add in the reality redemption mod and turn up saturation a couple of notches to brighten up the dim dingy tone and you could mistake it for a semi recent release.
TL;DR
RDR1 is not much like RDR2 in terms of gameplay. If the problem of RDR2 was how slow it felt for you, then you'll likely like how RDR1 feels instead.

Too many come to RDR2 trying to play it like GTA plays. Fast and action packed.

RDR2 isn't meant to be played that way, just going by design. More like a cinematic experience with gameplay too. I loved it, personally. Loved them both, thoroughly

RDR1 is meant to be more of a video game than a cinematic experience with gameplay.

2 isn't a simulation, but in some ways it felt like it tried too hard to be. RDR1 is silly fun arcade western. I played RDR1 to completion non stop when it came out. RDR2, I bounced off a few times before it finally sunk in. And it takes a good 10-20 hours before you really get deep into the game. So I do think you'd RDR1 if you like GTA3/Vice City/San Andreas type of gameplay... Its weird playing RDR1 after 2 because the movement feels so....free. RDR2 felt like someone has their hand on your controller at all times resisting everything you do. Want to run here? Too bad. Want to ride the horse through those trees? Nah, semi on rails, you're going around bud. etc...

You have to get past the starting area for the game to open up and you start having real fun. The beginning in the snowy area is on rails for the most part and it can be a bit tedious to get through.

Play RDR1, and gnaw away at your grey matter as penitence for whatever.

RDR is better in just about every way. Play it on Hardcore and the difference between the games is night and day.
