I break these two people up and pay the dude 200$ rather than shooting him straight in the face which seems more in line with what John would do as a reaction to some guy wanting to sell a woman.

10 seconds later a 'random event' breaks out at the inn. I lasso a dude harrassing a woman. Somehow this startled Eva and failed the quest!?

Edit: ok i could reload an autosave from just after the initial 'transaction'
Remains utterly absurd design.

Hmmmm. I don't want to spoil it for you but make sure you manually save at a close location before pursuing it.
