How does this play in 2024?
I've just played RDR2 for the first time and have to say it's one of the best games I've ever played.

I really want to give this a go to see more of John and how the story plays out with Dutch, Micah etc but I'm concerned it won't have aged well or compare well to RDR2.

In terms of gameplay and storyline it's good but going from RDR2 graphics to this it won't feel very nice since there is no real actual improvements in this area just a port with proper PC controls but nothing more than that.

Not as fluid as RDR 2, Doesn't do graphics very well!

like fine wine you can shoot your horse while ridding and tie women to train tracks and the old cheats work

Id say give it a go, but don't expect the same depth as RDR2. The story and action are still pretty good for it's age, but RDR is much more surface level in its presentation of characters. Pretty much every character, including Dutch, operates as a personification of an idea, practice, and/or culture of the dying west. So to say, they're pretty one note to get that point across. John's backstory and motivations are also quite different than what RDR2 tries to set-up, but technically it doesn't break canon. The best way to put it is if RDR2 is The Good The Bad and The Ugly, RDR is A Fistful of Dollars. Still, there's alot of great moments and sections in this game, and while, yeah, the graphics haven't aged the best, places like the mesas/plateaus in mexico are stylized in a really cool way, especially at night. Gameplay is basically just GTA4 wild west. That's pretty much it, hope you found this text block at all insightful lol

Great game with a great story. I’ve enjoyed RDR1 far more than RDR2. Yes RDR2 being significantly newer it has better graphics, gunplay, and attention to detail but that happens with age. I got bored and quit RDR2 multiple times because of how much filler they put into it. On the play through where I actually beat the game, I had to play in 30-60 minute increments just to get through it. The story had great moments but they were too spaced out, I think the game would have benefited from a shorter story. Of course everything a preference, you might love one or the other, or even hate both.
Very good experience, if you never played it you in for an authentic Western story. Which is not your usual one.
AND the gameplay holds perfectly, the guns have good impact, horse riding is awesome and even if it is an arid place, it is extremely fun to explore and find random encounters, missions or treasures. The map is big, but not HUGE and EMPTY like San Andreas.
I say it still plays very well.
Ofc aged graphics.

Preferring it to rdr2 currently, only gripe is the cameras a bit zoomed out but im on steam deck so a regular monitor shouldn't bother you

RDR 2 fans are notorious for not understanding writing at all. This game has more depth in its writing and a more nuanced execution of its characters than Red Dead 2 does. Simply put; it says a whole lot more with a whole lot less. Red Dead 2's writing is in no way bad, just pretty hamfisted with how it beats you over its head with its themes directly through dialogue

I disagree, RDR1's story is more linear and more plot driven while RDR2's story is more character driven and complex. It has more moving pieces and character's like John Marston definitely had less nuance and player agency than Arthur Morgan.

RDR1 also definitely has several moments where it sort of feeds you messages and themes to the player rather than allowing them to realize them on their own, not many, but it's weird to act like 2 is specifically guilty of this.
