A lot of the dialogue during riding is lost?
First time I'm playing RDR1, but in RDR2 i would usually slow down while riding to listen to listen to what NPC's had to say, or at least most of it. They also seemed to ride slow enough that you could listen to the whole conversation, unless you speed up the pace.

Now in RDR1, the NPC's will ride at their own speed and all you can do is match it. and that speed is fast enough that won't allow the whole dialogue to take place.

I've noticed it right at the beginning during the mission "Justice in Pike’s basin", when I was going for gold medal, in one of the runs I fell behind which caused the NPC's to skip a whole chunk of the dialogue, and because of that there was enough time during the ride for some new lines to take place. And quite a few lines too, not just a little bit.

So really you just traded an early bit for the latter one, that makes it so you can't really listen to the whole thing in 1 run.

I've already noticed the same thing during subsequent missions too, you can kinda tell lines are getting cut of as you arrive too fast at the objectives only by matching their speeds.

I know it's kinda OCD and most people don't care, but still wish you could slow down riding sections somehow sometimes.

Yes it's true.

If it's important to you to hear all the dialog, can't you just stop matching their speed until the talking's done? Then when the talking stops, match speed again. if there's more dialog triggered further along the route, stop matching speed again. That should slow you to a walk and grant the time needed to hear all the lines. Is this not how it works?

From the missions I did so far, I don't think that's possible, NPC's only seem to go at full speed (as in the speed they were programmed to go) or if you fully stop, they're gonna wait for you but stop talking and say something generic along the lines of "Come on, let's move!". This might cut of a chunk of the dialogue and can enable you to listen to latter parts of the conversation, but like I said earlier, you're just trading a part of the dialogue for another.

Yes, maybe so, I had not tried it myself as I'm eager to get on with it.

What happens if you do the Thrall dance? By which I mean make little circles so that you are still near them and don't seem to be lagging behind, but in WoW's case it's to avoid outrunning them. It sounds like you need to get them to stop periodically but not have them react as though you have come to a halt. I will probably never bother with this on PC, but if you don't mind entertaining my idle curiosity good fortune will come to you.
