RDR1 is just ok
It's a good game and a great port but after completing the main game i found myself just rushing through the main missions just to finish the game as there is zero point in gathering flowers or skinning things, i had no interest in the side missions as they don't add nothing.
Maybe i am spoilt by RDR2 / GTA V but i wish i had waited for it to be on sale as don't agree with the price, maybe £20 ish is more reasonable.

These are side activities intended to be completed during your main play-through. They are required for Stranger missions and Outfit unlocks.

I understand that, i just felt it added nothing to the game apart from padding it out. I didn't feel the need to unlock any outfits or really need to grind money to buy guns etc as completed it without any issues and the world didn't interest me like RDR2, might just be me but i didn't enjoy it as much as i thought i would. Nothing against the port or game just not my thing

Something I noticed was the lighting isn't even in the same universe as RDR2.
Every scene seems to be constantly bathed in dull grey shadows.
Back in the day nothing came close to RDR... but now?

What do you mean? The "point" of side missions or gathering flowers is the same across both games.

The side missions play a lot differently than most open world games. You're supposed to do them as you come across them like you would be having experiences "in real life." It's on par with say you were walking down the road on your way to your cousin's house for his birthday party, you saw a guy beating up a woman in alley, so you rushed into the alley to whomp the guy and help her. People aren't used to side missions being like that in open world games, but that's how they are in this one. They're meant to be like "random experiences" that you'd have while doing the "main things" in your life. If that makes sense. That's why the map's not chock full of icons all over the place like most are. :)

Also, if you had played them, you'd see they do add to the story, just not in the way you think. They don't always add on to the main story but the fun in them is the people you meet, the weird things you do, etc. Like coming across REALLY crazy people, bigfoot, other stuff.

I couldn't get over how empty the world feels, I don't even mean the lack of people which is to be expected in that time period, just the sheer lack of vegetation. I had no inclination to explore it like I did the 2nd as it was constantly reminding me how empty everything feels.

Rockstar just used the wow factor like finally RDR1 on PC to milk the early adopters of 50 euro but there is nothing in this minimal port to justify this price after 14 years i expect a sale soon cause the number of players is small so they need to try and keep the game alive somehow and they can only do that with a discount.

When I played this back in the day on the PS3, I had more interest in the side content and pacing things between the main missions. Nowadays I'm only interested in the story and to be honest, there is enough busywork-type missions in this game without getting embroiled in the padding side of it.

First timers and completionists will be interested in this sorta thing but with all the open world games we've had in the last 15 or so years plus personal time constraints, I'm just not motivated or engaged in these world-building extras.

The outfits are ugly and useless. And every single side quest turns out to be A) John making things worse or B) they end to be pointless and bleak.

I feel you. Exact my thoughts. This is soooo disappointing...
