Even though RDR2 story wise takes place before this game, going from 2 to this will be so damn jarring. As N said, this one definitely feels dated. So I'd say play this one, and then play 2.

About the best illustration to what playing 2 and then playing 1 would be is like playing the Yakuza 1 and 2 remakes which were completely new games essentially and then playing Yakuza 3 remastered. That series had a slew of entries after 3 to reward you with for your trouble. RDR2, which is a pretty strong runner for the best game of all time, is far better in its nuance and production value, and it was written with fans of the original in mind.

From a technical perspective play rdr then rdr2 so you won't get the jarring effect of the lower res textures. But from a story perspective if you play rdr2 first then playing rdr afterwards takes on a whole new meaning in the story since much of what is only hinted at you now know from firsthand experience. Just the opening scene is so much more entertaining if you had played rdr2 first. It's almost like rockstar made the first game with the second in mind and that ultimately you would want to play rdr2 first then rdr.
