The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II

LOLCOWLISATION / TRANSLATION errors and re-writes MEGA-THREAD... CRIMSON SiN edition
It's that time again, we all know how it's gonna go at this point.

Starting the thread up early this time as we now have advertisements and demo's out with text we can use already.

Again, use this as a place to post all changes made by the people at NISA, along with any other text related bugs (incorrect item/craft descriptions etc) or issues you stumble across, as god knows NISA don't have an internal QA team that will do it.

I myself probably won't interact much on this thread as Kuro 2 absolutely sucks ass (3/10 on a good day) , and i have better games to spend my limited time on, but still wanted to see the abominations that NISA made on this entry regardless. (i can already think of multiple things they will change in this entry and have my bingo sheet ready!!)

Massive o7 to all of you brave soldiers who will put up with the game not only with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation, but also the horrendous dub aswell to collect this info.

You people are heroes among men.

Gotta give it to you. You are genuinely very consistent in making these threats its somewhat comforting in a way. New game new thread by zekkn. Genuinely curious about a few things though:

1:Have you seen the translated lyrics of the opening for this game(they started doing that now apparently)? If so what do you think of the translated lyrics are they accurate.

2:Have you played kai no kiseki yet(no idea if you tend to play on pc or not you might have said so at some point but in that case I forgot). If you did play it what do you think of the game. I have unfortunately been spoiled on a few things(namely the credits sequence). So I know a few things. Gotta say it honestly got to me. But I have no idea how the game compares in a game play sense to Daybreak 1 or 2.

Please don't take this as me provoking you I am genuinely curious. I won't blame you if you don't want to answer me considering the conversations we have had in the past but I am genuinely curious for your opinion on those things.

Yeah finished Kai the week it came out.

In terms of gameplay i can happily say it's up there with the best in the series (Being Sky 3rd and Hajimari). Granted the xipha system could use some work as to allow you to build characters more the way you want, but for the most part i feel like they are finally back on track in terms of gameplay.

Story wise overall i enjoyed it, though the game was carried by kevins route, then HEAVILY carried by Rean and class VII's route.

Van's route multiple times i had to take breaks because they would put me to sleep cause nothing of interest was happening and i felt like almost all of the Solutions office characters were wasted. (Van and agnes were the only Solution characters that had really done anything/left an impact for me... maybe rissete but even then thats mainly due to her story importance and the role she MAY play later on)

Van's route only picks-up/becomes worth staying awake for in the last 1/3rd of his route. Whether this is caused by the way kuro 2 was handled, or they just struggled to give the kuro crew anything to do is up in the air at this point.

I honestly believe you could cut out over half of the van route and the game would be better by doing so, which is not something you really want from your main crew's story.

As for the reveals i was satisfied enough with what they did explain (alot of which i predicted before kai's release, even characters behind the masks *wink *wink). I like how the ending's reveal actually brings into question why some things were the way they are throughout the entire series (especially in regards to how time works... if you know you know). Also like how they finally gave Rene some more character after hinting for the past 2 games about him.

Overall it was a solid 7.5-8/10 held back (ironically) by the main teams arc of the game.

I Hope Kai 2 (Name pending) wraps up the republic arc nicely. I Could see this series ending in 3 games (after Kai 2) if no issues arise in the development cycle.

Also nah, we may disagree on alot (mainly about XSEED/NISA's handling of the series) but better you who explains why they think the opinion they have then someone who makes a statement and doesn't atleast try to justify why they think the way they do, or have a discussion about it.

Always happy to discuss a series i'm passionate about and enjoy. I wouldn't be trying to point out all the issues with every western release of this series if i didn't love them so much and want others to play and experience the great story/characters i know are there (just hidden behind the japanese language toggle, sadly... STILL).

EDIT; just realised i essayed that much i forgot to answer the first question; no i haven't checked out the TL'd lyrics yet, mainly cause im just more busy doing other stuff atm and having played kuro 2 multiple times already (begrudgingly) anything to do with the western release has been the furthest in the back of my mind. My game backlog is massive as it is and if i was gonna play any Kiseki game in the near future it would either be another run through Kai, or a CS1-Hajimari reee-playthrough...

O the of backlogs. I know how that feels. I won't give you a complete rundown of all I still have to play but it is a lot, not to mention all the manga I still have to read and audio books I have to listen to. Its way way to much to do currently. I will probably finish Daybreak 2 regardless of its quality within a month from release like I I did for cs4, Reverie and db1. But I am also in the middle of a kingdom hearts 3, Trails to azure and Tokyo Xanadu play through(that game is putting me of a bit due to weird translation errors such as text just straight up missing or being grammatically incorrect maybe its because of me using the switch localisation mod).

But as for Kai. Its unfortunate that Van's route is a low point. I really liked him in Daybreak and from the limited things I have seen of daybreak 2 and Kai I liked his moments to. I guess I will have to see what I think late this or somewhere next year(at least that is when I am hoping it will gets its English localisation). In the meantime I can enjoy the music which I bought physically (it just arrived yesterday actually).

I am happy to hear you liked the game play though. I did like the daybreak combat but Reverie was just better. Happy to hear it's going to get better.

I am also happy to hear that we are still on speaking terms. I feel very similarly to you. We might disagree on some things (maybe a lot of things even) but I will rarely pas on a opportunity to talk with someone on a series I enjoy so much as Trails. There aren't that many people I can talk about it with as is (no idea if you experience that same problem) because of how little people actually know about it. I am still trying to get some friends into playing the series I will see how that goes.

From my experience with Kuro 1, light hearted conversations/banters tend to suffer the most. These fan fiction writers needed to use these games for their comedy resumé. They use paraphrasing and slangs originated from America 90% of the time, they cannot leave characters speak plainly, strictly from the original script. Problem is, real-world slangs and takes me out of immersion and usually have no context with in-game lore.

>> Prologue

Scene: Entering Centre Marché
Van: ここでいつも賑わっているな。 / It's always bustling here, huh.
Van (NISA): Market's as bustling as ever. People're packed in here like sardines.

Not sure why the additional sentence is needed, people there are NOT packed like sardines.

Scene: Helped Alvis finding the Desire survivor.
Van: やれやれ、あの若いのももう少し 余裕を持った方がいいんじゃねえか? / Good grief, that kid needs to loosen up a bit, don't you think?
Van (NISA): Phew. Someone seriously needs to load that guy up with chill pills.

Is chill pill a thing in this universe?

Scene: Meeting Agnès
Van: That aside, isn't it too early to be out of school? I see you've finally decided to start skipping class, huh?
Van (NISA): Hold up, school's not out yet, is it? Can't believe our girl's playin' hooky. You really are spiraling down the slippery slope to deliquency.

Why always need to use American slang when English is used by rest of the world.

Odette: 特別外出中に堂々と逢引きとは 不良になったもんですにゃ〜? / Boldly meeting someone during a special outing, huh. You're becoming a delinquent, aren'tcha?
Odette (NISA): Ah, I see why you got permission to leave early. Off to have a little romantic rendezvous with your hubby-to-be? Naughty, naughty![/i]

Cringe.

Scene: Agnès came to help.
Van: Since you've come all the way here, I expect you to provide me with your full support, Assistant No. 1.
Van (NISA): You went to all this trouble to get in on the action, so I'll be expectin' some A+ support. Got it?
Agnès: Yes, leave it to me……!
Agnès (NISA): Got it! I'm going to blow those expectations out of the water!

Van's tone shifts to sound more patronizing than appreciative.

>> Chapter 1

Scene: Chatting at Arkride Solutions
Pink-Haired Girl: Mmm~ Sometimes coffee is good too~.
Pink-Haired Girl (NISA): Mmm, mmm. This coffee is simply divine! I'd totally have it every day if it was this good.
Brown-Haired Boy: That's all well and good, but…… that's a little too much milk don't you think?
Agnès: You too, Van…… four sugar cubes seems excessive.
Agnès (NISA): Don't think I didn't notice you sneaking in four sugar cubes, Van. That's really not good for you.
Van: It's fine, don't worry about the small details.
Van (NISA): Okay, Mom.

They still can't help themselves from writing fan fictions on every "slice of life" moments.

Scene: Cont. Agnès offers to fill in for Risette's absence.
Agnès: Umm, if it's about the paperwork, I'll do my best to sort it out!
Agnès (NISA): Well, umm... You can tell her not to worry! I'll do my best to hold down the fort!
Van: No, you have school too.
Van (NISA): And let your own schoolwork pile up instead? No way, José.

Another random American slang insertion.

Scene: Van surprised at Mirabel knowing about Mare.
Van: ……Seriously, how much do you know?
Van (NISA): Damn it. Y'all's info network is freakin' insane.

Scene: Nadia & Swin followed Van & Agnès into Märchen Garten.
Nadia: It's not that we have any problem with that chief in particular, but we're not a fan of the CID.
Nadia (NISA): Listen, nothing against the chief lady, but we'd rather avoid the CID like the plague.

I have to admit, seeing the comparison side by side like that, I actually prefer the NISA translations, and by quite a lot. It's just much more enjoyable to read, in my opinion. I'd go as far to say the games would be quite a bit worse without the NISA translation.

I mean, I understand the complaint about "American slang", but this is NIS America. And like it or not, the United States is the dominate market for pretty much everything in the free world, including video games. So, it shouldn't be any surprised to see American English here.
This is the only image you need to see to know what type of localization this is going to be.
https://nitter.poast.org/pic/orig/media%2FGaRhJt1XgAAJqpY.jpg

I noticed that trailsinthedatabase has been updated with the Daybreak 1 script recently. If Daybreak 2's script also gets updated, I will try to help.
oh dear god people are already posting screenshots/clips on twitter.

All i can say is if it's this bad already this game is cooked and NISA should straight up be properly audited and investigated by either Falcom or an outside 3rd party, cause to be able to get away with the ♥♥♥♥ they are doing deliberately at this point, while proceeding to charge full new game prices for games that are 2-3 Years old is a crime against this series and people's intelligence (wouldn't have a problem paying full price to support the game if they actually gave us the series in english like is expected).

Lets hope falcoms Sky 1st Remake self publish goes well and they ditch NISA (hopefully before giving them the rights to kai) for all eternity.

To all NISA employees, if you want to write your own characters and stories, become a game studio and go make your own games, for EVERYONE'S sake.

I still like the NISA translation better, and a lot better in fact. It's just a much more enjoyable read to me from the comparisons mentioned in this thread.

My main issue with NISA right now is the pricing of the games and the fact that the anti-consumer behavior seems to be getting worse and worse.

but then the problem arises, you don't like falcoms characters or story, you like what NISA made up. A fake wearing the skin (character model) of the original.

Your free to like their (XSEED & NISA's) "style" of writing (it's cringe, disrespectful and bottom tier quality to me, it shows more so why they aren't hired in the industry proper), but replacing the original characters and lines is unacceptable.

NISA is free to become their own game company and produce the works they envision (as it is clear that's all they want to do). But to do so over others work, while selling it as a representation of said work is disrespectful and false advertising.

I guess I don't like Falcom's characters or story then, because NISA's translations are just far more enjoyable to read than the Fan TL. I'd even go as far to say I might not even be able to finish these games if the comparisons shown in this thread is basically what I'd be reading for 100+ hours. It would just be a total bore.

It's certainly fair to point out and criticize NISA for situations like Reverie with all the errors that it had, but I don't view any of what is shown in this thread to be "making things up" or "replacing the original characters". I just don't share you're viewpoint at all on the translations, and calling it "disrespectful", "bottom tier quality" or above just seems excessive an extreme to me.

We're just different fans, I guess. Like, I don't refer to the games as their Japanese names like you do. I'm not Japanese so why would I do that? And I don't want a literal or direct translation into English that is boring to read. That kind of translation is not necessarily a good thing when localizing a game. I want it to be "Americanized" and NIS America has done a good job at that and making it enjoyable to read.

Anyways, can't you just use the fan translation if you like it better as a mod or something?

dear god i tried to give you the benefit of the doubt and a way out of your horrible take, but doubling down is also an option i guess (granted it's the very reason english translations have been pretty ♥♥♥♥ for decades but oh well).

I can only point out the obvious facts, if you don't like the trails series or falcoms games (atleast story/character wise) there is only so much i can do.

PS; the "literal" translation cop-out rebuttal everyone relies on doesn't work anymore, enough people know how language and translation works to know the difference between accurate and "FAN" (heavy quotes) fiction.

Also english is spoken in more places than just california, so your whole compliment falls flat.

You should also encourage NISA to make their own games/studio seeing as you love their writing style so much, then leave the trails series to people who know what translation entails... win-win for everyone.

Why would I need a way out? I like what I like, and I don't really care what anyone else thinks about that.

And of course, clearly, you're pointing out nothing but facts and clearly no one can be a fan of the story or characters if they like NIS America's translations.

Yes, English is spoken in places other than California, like the 49 other States in the greatest country in the world. But, again, this is NIS America, so it should be American English. Don't like it? Use the fan translation.

The win-win for everyone would be letting the people who like the official translation just enjoy that, and the people who like the Fan translation can mod the game and use that. You'd think that'd be obvious, but for whatever reason you act the way you do.

If localizers taught me anything, is that Americans are all over dramatic sarcastic a**holes.
Also if you are going to tell people to use the fantranslation, you might as well tell them to buy a different version. Why should the localizers be rewarded for the fan translators work?

Yeah... because all those Americans are the ones who're acting like over dramatic a-holes right now. You're a funny guy.

Buy a different version then. I don't really care what you do, so do whatever you want. Teh option is there for you to use the fan translation if you want. You want to buy the CLE version to do or the NISA, I really don't care.

This is how I know you're screwed up, because you're looking at it like "oh my god", "How could we do anything that might reward NISA?" It's all negative. Instead, you should be looking at it like it's rewarding Falcom, but maybe you don't care about that. Maybe rewarding Durante for their port? Which is leaps and bounds better than CLE garbage, but you ignore anything slightly positive and just focus on the negative because it might support NISA.

It's bizarre behavior. Both of you.

Well... yeah... When you tell me that "Okay Mom" is the Americanized version of "Don't worry about it", the implication is that Americans are jerks by nature. Of course, I don't believe this to be true, but that's what you implied when you said the script is supposed to be Americanized.

It's all negative. Instead, you should be looking at it like it's rewarding Falcom, but maybe you don't care about that.
I already support Falcom. Translation is an important topic for me, and will happily support any localization team that can maintain a faithful translation. Saying that you like the localization is one thing. Saying that the character tones are not different is objectively false, and N o i r e already provided a better explanation that I did.
I'm not sure why this needs a thread when you people already have your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fan translation, are you just mad that people can enjoy the NISA version?
