To anyone who has crash on start.

Hi,

If your game is crashing on start and you have already tried running steam in offline mode and using the launch version of the game (available as beta), then what worked for me was forcing the game to run at my native resolution as a launch option, I simply put xres=3840 yres=2160 and it worked.
Here is a cheat sheet you can copy into the launch options box, I have only included common resolutions. To find out which is for you, right click on your desktop and select "screen resolution" then look at what is in the resolution box, if it is different to what is below then you will just need to write it in manually

To enter these right click on Age of mythology in your steam library, hit properties, then hit "set launch options", it will bring up a box for you to type in.

xres=2560 yres=1440
xres=2560 yres=1080
xres=1920 yres=1080
xres=1680 yres=1050
xres=1600 yres=900
xres=1366 yres=768
xres=1280 yres=720

I finally found the problem after 1 year of searching, when you open the launcher and press play, immediatly press "ALT + ENTER". Your game should start when doing that.

Right click on the game in your library -> Properties -> General -> Under Steam Cloud untick "Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud for Age of Mythology: Extended Edition"

Thanks, still helpful 7 years later. Can't believe this hasn't been fixed. Trying to set an unsupported resolution should not cause a crash...

THANK YOU omg i spent hours screwing with the settings and my anti-virus trying to get it to load, this fixed it immediately.

what worked for me is to press Alt+Tab when the game is opening, right before it crashes, select the steam window (or any other app), the game will open but with a different resolution, when the game can get started you can change the window resolution in the game, select the resolution that matches with your pc.

You need to modify the following file: SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Age of Mythology\Users\Default.prf in notepad.
You need to replace the resolution:
<resolution>...</resolution>
<resolutiony>...</resolutiony>
to
<resolution>1920</resolution>
<resolutiony>1080</resolutiony>

and
<windowmode>0</windowmode>
to
<windowmode>1</windowmode>
save the file and you can play.

It works on Win 11.
