Lack of CPU optimization killing performance?

That's AoM EX on 1080p Max Vsync-off on my Gigabyte P34G laptop (i7 4700HQ, 8GB RAM, GTX760M, installed on SSD)

My framerate remains at around 55fps or lower all the time when the GPU is only at 80-85% load.
CPU is not taxed either. One core at around 80%, the others at mere 20%. The Hyperthreads aren't used at all really (8%).

So the game seems to bottleneck at 80% usage on a 2.4GHz Haswell core. Even if my laptop had a GTX880M I'd still only get 50-60fps due to that.

@Skybox lab: This needs urgent attention. Implement better multicore usage or optimize the single thread, but it's not acceptable that AoM EX runs worse than many recent demanding 3D titles. The better effects do NOT warrant such bad performance.

PS: Similar behavior on my tower. i5 4670, 8GB RAM, GTX770. 50-60fps with no component fully used.

The game cannot use multiple cores, it's 12 years old engine. Making it multithread would mean rewriting code from scratch, which is not happening.

Yeah unlikely for that to happen.

But it would be a sign for MS and the devs actually being serious. Just smacking some more effects on old code isn't professional.

Well if they wanted to rewrite the code, why not make a completely new game instead :-)) I think it wouldn't really make sense to put such mammoth effort into it. But hey, maybe we'll be surprised, who knows :-)
It would make sense if they were seriously interested in remastering the game.

If you're a company and do low quality work, that'll bite you in the ass eventually.
They've already identified a problem that is causing serious issues for some. Because it had to do with hooks being called way too often, I'm guessing it's actually tanking everyone's performance, just some machines are plowing through it better.

When you combine that with the game defaulting to integrated graphics for some, I'm guessing you've got the majority of people's performance issues right there.
Ha, yeah, on my integrated HD4600 I can't even maintain 20fps at the same settings.
But that's actually interesting as well. That the 760M only produces framerates three times as high as the HD4600 while it's technically capable of more than that. But as said, CPU optimization would fix that.
This game is too poorly optimized.
I want all cores to be used, to alleviate the massive load to RAM , if played to long in a game instance. I love this game, and if a sequel was made with new code, that fixed these issues, and had like, 10 more campaigns, that would be great!!! Using mythology from Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Especially the those Skrælings
Sigh.

Youngesters oblivious to how old this game is.
