Age of Mythology: Extended Edition

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition

Unsurprisingly, the Original runs better...
I've been waiting for this game since it's announcement, and have been playing AoM for what seems like forever.

I waited and waited, and finally got in after unpacking the preload,

......and the fps is atrocious.

I have all the video options turned off, resolution set at minimum, and its almost not even worth playing.

I have a Alienware M14x laptop with a 2.3gHz (8core) processor, 8gb of RAM, DX11, and all the things that should make it incredibly easy to play this game with a great framerate.

What is the issue here?

I also had problems running the game smoothly on my laptop with a GeForceGTX660M and it barely run as you described. However, I found out that the game didn't use my GeForce graphics card by default but it used my integrated graphics card. I just had to manually make the game use my better GPU and I never again had performance problems with it. =)

Okay dev's great job ! I can now play the campaign without framerate issue, just some freezing sometimes.
And I'm not sure of that but the game seems to be smoother in english than french... weird but there is might be something to look over there.

Great job again, very fast !

Intel driver --> "Maintain Display Scaling". It's basically trying to keep the same pixel density on the screen and is a really stupid setting. Surface pro 2s do the same thing but for whatever reason don't allow maintain display scaling to be unchecked (gotta just change system resolution then). Unfortunately that's locked in Intel's hands with the drivers.

I don't even have it. The non-extended edition of this game can be found in stores for as little as 5 EUR, so spending 27 EUR on remake that has marginally better graphics is not something I justify. There was nothing wrong with the original, all it needed was a patch for 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions, and a working online multiplayer mode. I am a huge Age of Empires and Age of Mythology fan, but the way these two games have been treated is just sad.

Lol you all paid 4 times the price you could have gotten the originals for and it runs worse. That is amazing, consumer logic went out the window today.

I agree 100%. Ensemble Studios must be proud of this AoE2 and AoM digital editions. I can only hope that someday we can see a GOG edition without all this fancy visual effects that only overload your PC hardware and make the game look weird, when compared with the original.

How can this facelift justify the following system specs:

OS: Windows 7, 8.1+
Processor: 2.6 Ghz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Direct X 11+
DirectX: Version 11
Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
Additional Notes: GeForce 9800GTX, Radeon 4850+

When compared to the original recommended specs:

Processor: 1 GHz
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: 32 MB 3D Card
DirectX: Version 9
Hard Drive: 1.5 GB available space

I will keep my beloved Ubisoft Exclusive Editions of Age of Empire, Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations in a safecase.

I remember from CoH2 that the Twitch game-save feature murders FPS. If I knew how to turn it off I would.

same problem here...

Is that a serious question? You do know they're doing far more than just making the textures "HD" right?

I had this issue but turns out my laptop has NVIDIA Optimus which dynamically switches between the integrated Intel HD 4500 and the discrete GPU, but AoM was using the Intel GPU so my frame rate was at around ~20. If your laptop has the same design then chances are, AoM is favouring the Intel GPU rather than NVIDIA's one.

If you go to NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings then select aomx.exe from the list, you can change the preferred graphics processor to the "High-performance NVIDIA processor". This solved the issue for me and I got really great frame rates after.

Hope this helps!

What GPU does it have? DoTA 2 isn't demanding at all.

The 780m is a pretty daggone good GPU, so you should definitely not be getting 10 FPS in this game.

Following David|SerialVelocity advises (thanks !) on my laptop equiped with NVGTX760 (and Intel 4000), I succeed to reach FPS of 70 but I had to disable vsynch for that. Finally the game works well, and Optimus seems really to be the main issue with laptop.

Also, i have to comment, if any dev is reading, that one of the main problems after fps ( which i hope is fixed soon) is that i am experiencing extreme texture compression on everything, not just god portraits, be it units, buildings, the terrain or control group tabs, every texture is pixelated
