Not all units have cutscene models though.

If this is based on the original game, there's a chance that the newer models, ingame or cutscene only might even be of better quality, anyway. COnsidering it's supporting modern resolutions, I'd imagine it's something they'd have to do to maintain some level of quality.
I do BELIEVE the second model was the low graphic one. Mythology only had High and Low graphic modes, and I even remember that having the low one set, the Hoplites would use all just steel/plate/whatever armor with some color lines, while on High they would start almost naked, then get better armor by upgrading them, going from almost naked to a fully gold armor + team color lines.
TL:DR The left model seems to be the cutscene/High in-game mode, and the right one the low in-game one

Those detailed models use a format which nobody knows how to edit, the devs have already been asked whether they will release tools that allow you to edit these more detailed models but so far they just avoid these questions so its more than likely they wont bother giving us the tools to edit them since they keep pandering to the most useless questions, I mean seriously I've seen the devs ignore these kind of questions yet answer the same ones over and over lol?

Their biggest argument for not changing the models is that they do not want to change the artistic style, the cutscene models make that argument moot. This release is really minimal effort so I hope at least multiplayer works well in comparison to AoE2HD.

he was asking for a mod not for the devs to change it

Yes but sadly there isn't a cutscene version for every unit in the game, only few select units got a higher detailed model. It would look incredibly weird if some units were much more detailed than others.

If I recall correctly the community has tools already out there (good ones) to export 3ds models into the game format. The problem was more around some of the unit animation paths, and that I believe is going to be much trickier since that was not an area delved into for AOM Extended (we didn't change unit animations).
I know swapping out unit models for different or higher poly ones should be feasible with the tools out there, the end of the trailer has an example of that (Alfred the alpaca is replacing the bella unit model there).

If a modding team can do this.. well it would be neat :)

Yeah there is a tool that allows you to convert .brg models to 3ds and another tool that imports 3ds models into 3ds max. But the cinematic models all are .grn and no one was able to convert that yet and probably no one will in the near future. A simple solution would be converting those files for the modders or atleast give us the idle or just a static version of the model in .brg type.

You should be careful when editing animations as you cannot simply replace them. Animations are stored in .brg files. Another thing that is stored in .brg files is the lenght of the animation, if you change that the game might OoS. Especially when you changed an attack animation.

the grn models (or gr2 as in aoe3, also used in the stronghold series) is a format called granny 3d. This format is created by RAD game tools and the editor and converter are under licence. So don't expect ms to release a converter for that.

It's not true that no one knows how to convert those models. Ykkrosh had made a one way converter for gr2 models to 3ds by using the granny.dll shipped with the game. I have also been looking into this and been able to figure out some more, but I and others don't see the worth in the effort. The game would look weird anyway if you have only a few models in hd.

I see that the rad game tools site isn't even online anymore. I think the software is very out dated and no one really uses it anymore. Maybe you can find some old crack version somewhere of the game tools out there. Or maybe you devs can implement another more usable format than grn that also supports skeleton animations like Collada DAE e.g.
