Age of Mythology: Extended Edition

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition

I am sticking with this AoM EE.
I played this game many years ago. I will get back into it with this AoM EE, but I can surely recommend the game in general based on what I remember of the gameplay.

Speaking of which, it's the gameplay that counts, after the graphics pass a certain level of satisfaction. AoM EE looks fine to me.

I looked at AoM Retold and guess what. The very first thing that it told me was my AMD Radeon Graphics driver was out of date. Which AMD insisted was not the case before and after I tried to update it.

Players of AoM Retold report the same circumstances, including crashes later in the game even if they could start it. When I saw that, I hit the refund button.

Look, you take your own chances, of course. I am only saying why, in addition to the gameplay, I recommend staying with AoM EE unless you are damned sure your machine can handle Retold.

Which AMD graphics card do you have?

AMD Ryzen 5 5625U with Radeon Graphics, 2301 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s). And the latest driver, as I mentioned. I am not the only one in this situation, as you may see if you look over there in the discussions or Google the issue.

I should also mention that I have a 2024 (purchased, not necessarily built) Lenovo 82RQ laptop with 40 GB RAM (yes, you read that right) and Windows 11. There should not be a problem, really.

But as I mentioned to Steam when I requested a refund for Retold, it seems to be recent Microsoft Games versus AMD. I had the same difficulty with Age of Empires IV.

I should purchase Civilization VII when it comes out, just as a test. However, I don't want to freak Steam out with too many refund requests.

Besides, I find myself content with Civ VI, AOE II DE, AOM EE, AOW 4, Anno 1800, CK III, Cities Skylines, EU IV, Gal Civ IV, Stellaris, and Vic III, all of which run just fine on this thing.

Maybe there is a line for all of us where enough is enough as some point. I don't want to be a killjoy; I guess all I want to do is try to preserve and promote AOM EE (perhaps there's a bit of a reaction to the black and white game banner controversy, too).

You guys go do Retold. Some of us will stick with AOM EE. Everybody's happy.

But do You want to believe that Retold is not better that Extended Edition?

I would be interested to know what you believe is better about Retold than EE, other than the animation, of course. Just in general terms, bearing in mind what I said in the OP:

". . . it's the gameplay that counts, after the graphics pass a certain level of satisfaction. AoM EE looks fine to me."

So I am not interested in how beefy Zeus looks in Retold, or how his lightning bolt explosions look so powerful. What is better about the gameplay? Is there more storytelling? Are there more mythological quests, events, and beasts? That sort of thing.

id understand if you wanted to go back to voobly... but going back to EE? really?

I do not "believe",
I play both and I compare, and I do not want to idealize Retold, Extended Edition or original AoM

With the animation, You mean graphics, I mean

- that is the point, Retold actually improves the core gameplay, it is not just new graphics
- basically, it is, what definitive edition is for AoE2

"What is better about the gameplay?"
- QoL updates - superior UI, unit control & movement
- god powers were reworked, You can use them multiple times
- Norses were reworked
- many small things were rebalanced, redesignated, like two 1th age food techs were merged into one tech, no seperate updates for ships, etc

"Is there more storytelling? Are there more mythological quests, events, and beasts? That sort of thing."

You mean new content.
There are original AoM campaigns: Fall of the Trident, Golden Gift and New Atlantis, plus New God expansion, which adds new 4th Norse major god with 3 minor gods with own mythical units, powers and 1 story mission, where You play with this new god

Thanks for your response. I will keep what you said in mind; I do plan, for my next machine, to return to Intel graphics. Perhaps then I will give Retold another look.

You have problems because your "AMD Ryzen 5 5625U with Radeon Graphics, 2301 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s). And the latest driver" is simply outdated, even for older games.

The Lenovo 82RQ’s integrated AMD Radeon Graphics aren’t designed for most modern games either and will also struggle with high-demand titles, even with 40 GB of RAM.

While it is kind of fine for basic tasks and older games, this setup lacks the dedicated GPU power needed for a proper smooth performance in more graphics-intensive games.

AoM: Retold is superior in every aspect. I am saying this as an AoM veteran who is playing this game since 2002ish now.

Get a proper PC and you can find joy in new titles.

honestly for me, extended edition is better than retold simply because it's closer to the game i played in 2002, it looks, feels, and sounds the same. meanwhile retold is worst in everyway. keep in mind i'm only talking about the campaign because that's the only mode i truly care about and value above all else

First, I will thank you for your advice. Next, I will assure you that the following rancor has nothing to do with you.

I saw your response last night and I have been thinking about it since then. At first, my reaction was one of chagrin. My gosh, was my machine that antiquated and had I thus embarrassed myself by speaking out here?

But then, slowly, resentment built up. For crying out loud, I bought this laptop back in February. How can it be that out of date? At most, how long was it sitting in inventory, a year or two? Has video game graphic technology advanced so far in the meantime?

My resentment is not toward Lenovo but Microsoft. If they can't design a gosh darned game that can be played on a computer built sometime this decade, they can keep it. What, are their games so cutting edge now that only the elite with powerhouse computers can play?

The hell with Microsoft and their bullcrap. I like AoM EE and AoE II DE enough to overlook (I think) where they came from. But Microsoft is not getting another damned dime from me.
