Trouble launching AOM? This might fix it..
Hi folks

Recently I fell into the same group who couldn't get AOM running. There are plenty of ways and solutions that people have said. However I have come across one that i don't think people have mentioned(well couldn't find anything on it anywhere) or covered properly?? that worked for me.

Anyways if you are having the problem where you launch AOM and press either the Launcher or bypass Launcher mode, and it displays a black screen then disappears soon after, and then nothing happens? well here is the fix that might work, try this first and if not let me know and I will advise of the alternative fix that goes with it(won't list it because it shouldn't be needed).

You need to change the compatibility options of running the application.

there are two ways of getting to this setting, First way is the quickest way so I will only be listing this one.

-Go to your steam Library and click AOM on your library. The game page should show up.

-Then click the settings/cog wheel on the far right hand side(next to the 'i' and star). Once clicked, go to manage and then click browse local files. File explorer should pop up or flash on your windows bar.

-Head into that and it will bring up all the AOM files. Still on the same page, scroll down to you see 'AoMX(application file)', click(not double click) and then right click it. navigate to properties which should be on the bottom of that pop up text box.

-Once in, go to the compatibility tab and navigate to Compatibility mode and tick that box which says 'Run this program in compatibility mode for'. make sure that drop down menu is listing windows 8 as well.

-now once that is done, and whilst still on that same tab, go down to where it says settings and tick 'run this program as administrator'.

-Once all of the above is done make sure to click apply then ok, and exit.

Now Do those same steps for the next icon below 'AoMX' which says 'Launcher(application file'

If you get lost or confused, let me know. Otherwise I will make a YouTube video on it.

Hope this helps

Cheers Guys

I think this was meant to be under support but hopefully it makes its way around.

hmm. Try again with those same settings applied, but tick the box where it says 'run in 640x480 screen resolution'. then run the app again.

let me know if that works.

No problem thats Great to hear man! :) Judging from my experience you should now be able to untick that box(the 640x480 one only) and now run as per normal with your resolution to your preference. cheers

Seriously on a modern comp, you should have no install problems whatsowever. I literally just installined and run in under 10 mins under windows 10. This is in full HD (1920X1080) btw.

I agree with you, But unfortunately that wasn't viable. :(, and this is coming from someone who's PC was built using Brand new parts e.g i5-1600KF.. no idea why it happens to some and not others. But ah well, is what it is. :)

Hi I followed your inital instructions and it was still the same black screen then the game shuts down. So I also tried the 640x480 change and aside from making the launcher and screen look a bit funny, i had the same black screen then nothing. I've uninstalled the game for now, but hopefully there will be another working fix soon. Thanks

hmmm have you tried changing the compatibility to a different OS? ie windows 7? Also I'm interested to know your PC specs and the OS/Version you are running. Thanks

try running it through admin, sometimes that works too. Cheers
Johanna, did you reboot your computer after applying the fixes Jimmy mentioned? This is an additional step I had to do so it finally worked. Thanks a lot Jimmy!
I've tried all the suggestions here and rebooted the PC afterwards, still no luck, unfortunately.

are you installing aom extended plus dragon tales at the same time? if so try installing the game without dragon tales, then once in the game then install dragon tales.

No, I've made no changes, apart from what is suggested above. Nothing from the workshop, just the normal extended game. If it comes with dragon tales, and you tell me how, I will try removing it.

ok can't remember if I did it this way or not, but that shouldn't really make a difference. Once AOM is installed, go to library, then click aom. Once on AOM page scroll down to 'Manage DLC' go into that and then untick the install box next to dragon tales, then try all of the above steps. let me know if that works. cheers

Hi Timberwolf, I found this post recently because I was also stuck with the issue of black screen on start-up and then it would close. I followed the instructions and the game finally works! Thanks man
