How's the multiplayer in this game?

I remember playing this with my father when he was still around, and absolutely loved it. I'm glad to see steam achievements and cards added, but I really want to know if multiplayer is alive and kicking before I get it.

Is the multiplayer community healthy at the moment?

You basically have two options. Firstly, you play ranked games via 'quick match'. You can go 1v1 or 2v2, although for the latter you can barely find anyone. The game automatically find the person available which is closest to your level and who is also queuing for a game. If you lose you lose rating points, if you win you earn rating points. Secondly, you can play unranked games. Here you can choose your own opponents and even comp stomp if you would like to do so. You host or join a game lobby and set it up, choose map, victory conditions, etc. You can play maps standard in the game or play custom-made ones (of which most are minigame-like nowadays).
