Gold gather rates (eggy)
I did a test to find gather rates on gold and stumbled on something strange.

Here is what I did:

1 eggy villager on gold, with mining camp just behind it so it will drop off resources instantly (no empower). I set a trigger on villager to gather gold and stop the gathering at 3 minutes (empty all gold).

Here are the gather rates I got:

No upgrades: 0.717
Pickaxe: 0.833
Shaftmine: 1.000
Quarry: 1.044
Shaftmine + Book of Thoth: 1.000
Quarry + Book of Thoth: 1.122

First, the basic gather rate is lower than expected even when there are no walking times as in this test.

Second, Quarry doesn't really do much. Only +4.4% compared to shaft mine.

Finally, Book of Thoth improves the gather rate when I have Quarry, but does nothing when I have only shaft mine.

How am I supposed to figure this out by looking at the data files? Or is anything wrong with the test?

You can't beat actually jumping into the game and testing things. Sure, the proto/techtree XML files will show you what things should be, but in reality it's a bit different for a number of reasons...

Anyway, my thoughts in no particular order:

1) Did you count what the villager was carrying when you stopped?
2) Are you stacking these upgrades? They need to be stacked (IE pickaxe AND shaft mine), even though they look like override each other they don't if you're enabling them via the editor.
3) I haven't tested this, but it seems like a reasonable statement to make: You can calculate the expected gather per second, but resources are only transferred after a complete animation. Because of this, if your villager is carrying 9/10 resources it will swing a pick again despite the fact that it gathers more than 1 resource per swing, effectively wasting the excess.
4) The dropoff time even with no walk distance looks to be slightly nonzero.

Your results for Book of Thoth are concerning, and pretty puzzling.

Yes, I drop off everything at the end and I have all ups in the editor. It seems like the quirks with animation can explain this.

Still, if upgrades like the Book of Thoth don't actually reduce the number of swings required to get a full inventory then they're effectively useless...
