Agreed.
They're not, they're gonna make it $30 or more, because "it's a 3d gaem!!!1!" or some other half baked excuse.
Unironically assuming MS are gonna even work on a AoMDE, let alone a sequel, this whole situation seems to be a throw off from the fact that them "not forgetting about AoM" implies a bait and switch referring to the upincoming patch, with Adam Isgrene's words taken out of context.
Not to mention the plan for AoM in the long term is dependent on AoE3DE succeeding.
That's what I'm assuming at least, a discount for people that already own this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
They've remastered pretty much all of Ensemble's other games so there's no doubt they'll do this one as well.
The only question is when.
If there are no new developments for AoE4 or something else that is.
If I was a betting man, I'd say 2022 for the AoM: DE... in time for AoM's 20th Anniversary. Before then would be great, but if we don't have it by 2022 then it probably won't happen at all.
Even Halo Wars received a Definitive Edition and it's arguably one of Ensemble's lower end and not so well known games along with Rise of Nations.
I'm sure that both AoM and RoN will receive Definitive Editions as well, the only question is when exactly because it's obvious that not all remasters are being made by the same teams.
Skybox I think made this Extended Edition, Forgotten Empires made the AoE and AoE2 DE versions and AoE3's DE is being made by a 3rd studio and they also might do AoM since they have experience with the engine because AoE3, AoM and Halo Wars all share the BANG! engine which was originally created by Ensemble as a 3D RTS game engine back in the earlier 2000s.
Not sure if I'd want a Age of Mythology 2, but I was thinking, maybe they could make like a supercharged AOM definitive edition that's pretty much it's own sequel as well?
Adding maybe three new civilisations.
I'd say Romans, Aztecs, Japanese, Celts and an African civ would be on the short list there so whatever they need for the story I'd say.
I do think Romans would be a big draw to have due to popularity.
On top of that, they could add a new "godless" age up option under a legendary mortal of each faction which does not provide a myth unit but instead gives a new mortal unit or two, and benefits to your soldiers or economy.
For example for Greeks Leonidas could be one such mortal, and aging up with him could give you spartan hoplites, which are stronger and more expensive than the regular ones but are good against both cavalry and infantry.
Them mentioning that they haven't forgotten about AoM has been known for about 1 or 2 years now.
Again, there will a DE version, that's fairly obvious if even Halo Wars got one, it's just a matter of when exactly.
But I highly doubt that it will be more than just a remaster similar to the others, as we've seen only the AoE2 DE versions has gotten new campaigns due to mostly community efforts.
There is also the huge difference that we're talking about 2D vs 3D here, there is a hell of a lot more work in designing and making a 3D model as opposed to 2D sprites and that's why AoE3 DE will also be around 40-50 gigs which is as much as some modern day triple A titles at this point which is again, huge. It's like 2 or 3 times the original game's size.
And I also doubt they will add more than 2 full factions, again as you said those probably being maybe the Romans, the Japanese perhaps as a 2nd Asian civ and/or perhaps a South American civ altho most of them have already been done in AoE2 and AoE3 so Rome and Japan do seem the most likely choices at the very least.
Problem is however that AoM is the game with the lowest amount of civs out of all of the Age games and thus great more detail was put into them as well as each having it's own very distinct and unique campaign so they'll be forced to include campaigns for each new civ they add to keep that up.
Romans seems to be the obvious choice there due to popularity, but might still not be a given. I doubt anyone expected the Swedes and Inca's for Age of Empires 3 after all.
Personally I think Romans and Japan would be best, both are highly popular and also a connecting point with existing civs.
Romans would offer a bit of a connection to the Norse, they'd be more connected to Celts even but I figure an Asian civ would be better as the second civ to connect the Chinese a bit.
Of course others than Japan could be an option too, but Rome and Japan would no doubt hold the most appeal.
They'd just need their own mechanics for favour and heroes.
For Rome, I think I'd go with a commander unit that is a hero and can inspire troops to temporary do bonus damage to myth units. Similar to Arkantos's ability, but only to myth units. Maybe each age could give acces to a new commander unit of increasingly higher rank.
They could grant favour in the arena, where you can recruit gladiators which can also be assigned to fight in the arena to generate favour.
For Japan, the heroes could be Samurai and could be more like the Norse: able to train many but they aren't as strong as the Greek or Chinese ones.
Priests could generate favour by meditating at their temple.
And for a campaign they could do something that incorporates all seven factions. A group of powerfull beings, one of each faction, could work together to try and claim rulership. They could switch themselves around, to attack each other's enemies with forces and tactics these nations have no experience against.
And in response a team of seven heroes could rise, one of each faction, trying to set their problems aside to destroy this evil.
Both the new factions would be playable most of the time, but previous factions would either be playable or be present as reinforcements or such.
The heroes could all exist within their own mythology as well as the villains, but all could be new to the game. And a mix of men and women.
They wouldn't need to be the greatest heroes in their mythology, but can rise to the occasion to prove themselves.
For example for the Greeks it could be Penthesilea. She was an amazon queen and daughter of Ares. Someone with the blood of the god of war is bound to have potential.
And the other heroes could similary be someone with interesting origins like that with disappointing deaths in their mythology.
Sweden was very much expected since they were a scrapped civ that the devs originally wanted to add to the game, and so were the Italians, both of which you can see here: https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Cut_content#Age_of_Empires_III
And if you go to the AoM section there you can also see a lot of mention of Rome and how the Atlanteans are very much inspired by them, this is fairly obvious in a few of their units like the Destroyer which resembles a Roman Legionary, the Charioballista which is obvious from the name, the Argus which means Arrow or Bow in Latin and the Murmillo and Fanatic both resembling gladiators.
The only thing which probably wasn't expected at all was the Inca in the AoE3 DE version and seeing as they want to either bring cut content or more exotic such to the remasters I would guess that they're probably going to add either the Romans in their full glory or as you said, Japan or the alternative being a South American civ.
Either it will probably be something with a good mythology, the only problem here being that Roman such is often said to just be a copy of the Greek one and while there are probably a lot of similarities I wouldn't agree fully, or something more exotic.
I've also made a mod that somewhat features the Romans and I do believe that their officers will act as some sort of hero units, I mean the Centurion is probably one of the best known ranks of the ancient world after all so you can't have Rome without their "Heroes" so to speak.
