Is this true or speculation on your part? I played Arknights long ago and never played GFL. I did read that players from GFL came to snowbreak because of what was going on over there although I don't really know much about that situation. To me Snowbreak in the beginning looked like it was trying to be a game for everyone. They have some nice looking tactical outfits as well and I hope they would do more even if they had to add outfit damage to them. Since tactical outfits on their own probably wouldn't sell well.
"having multiple performance, gameplay and Story problems..."
Yeah it was pretty bad in the beginning but so far they have been improving on these aspects, of course we can continue to hope that they keep on this path. The earlier chapters 1-10 were okay but the chapters later on definitely got better. They are also redoing chapters 1-10 so we'll have to see how that goes.
"attempts to appeal to the Arknights/GFL crowd failed..."
Again, true or speculation? The fan service route was obviously a gamble to keep the game alive and it worked since CN liked it and ate it up causing the massive profits that Seasun has been seeing. The VA drama is such a miniscule event that only pertained to a small part of global in the west although they were really loud when it happened and I say west because it is a western "political" issue that people have problems with. CN also having their own "political" issues in their gaming world.
"complain about a female character option for their blank state character"
It makes sense after the whole turn around of the game. The game is catered to the CN player base (since the majority of profits come from them) and Seasun will listen to everything they have to say and implement them even if some of those suggestions are extreme. There was a post on reddit that was posted by a CN player explaining the ideas behind some of the suggestions, it's titled "As a CN player, let me explain why CN players refuse male characters." It's a pretty interesting read since it also goes into their gaming politics as well.
I'm always pre-registering for games and it's been a long time since any of these types of games have really kept me in their ecosystem for this long. The TPS definitely sold me in the beginning even though it wasn't the best.
If you or anyone else that happens to read this and have some free time and are interested in doing a bit of a deep dive, if you skim through the reddit from the beginning to recent you can actually see when the tides turn. In the beginning people were open to having male operatives. With these same people calling out and being "toxic" to those who only wanted to see female operatives and then the update that switched the game to fan service happened and it became vice versa. Obviously the no male and only female side "winning". I will add that it doesn't matter which side would have "won" in the global space since we aren't really the ones that are being catered to. The good thing is that we do have CN players that are watching the global players back and go to the reddit to get globals feedback to then give to the devs since they have better access to the devs.
It is a long post but I do care about this game, fan service or not and I hope after the anniversary we at least get two more years or more.
"Is this true or speculation on your part? I played Arknights long ago and never played GFL. ..."
It is pretty obvious if you ever played GFL or Arknights. Oripathy = Juvosis, Originum = Titagen, Adjutant being some important person that we progressively learn about like the Doctor, Yggdrasil seems go the same direction as Griffin & Kryuger and many other small details.
"...The fan service route was obviously a gamble to keep the game alive and it worked since CN..."
Fair my main argument there was just that their initial attempts failed and that the drama attracted people like Captain Sugoi in the west.
"...The game is catered to the CN player base (since the majority of profits come from them)..."
Nah the only thing the CN player base or more accurately the CN player base that just want self insert harem fap material dislikes when their waifu interacts with male NPCs and some kind of relationship is implied with a male NPC.
Look up the CN Type 95 NTR drama.
Also GFL Commander's sex can be selected and the anime and manga version is female. The cn player base won't care if there is yuri with or without the player, hell they would like it so long there is no male npc that touches their waifu.
Part of Gatekeeping is not entertaining these people because all they want to do is complain and try to divide the fanbase. It's why I always recommend ignoring them. Their input is never constructive or useful because it's always about changing the very thing people love instead of adapting to it. Nobody is forcing them to play the game. There are tons of games that I don't like. I don't go in their communities and advocate for them to change to my taste.
The entire premise behind such conversations is a moot point because nothing is to be gained from it. You're going to have two parties who won't ever agree with the other one. It's a waste of time thankfully because the devs don't even speak English. It's a mixed blessing, but in the current cultural environment it's more good than bad.
It's pretty evident this discussion is agitating you a bit too much. Unless your goal is to get the thread locked up for no other reason than people discussing something that you don't like, may I suggest the unsubscribe button in the top right?
I looked it up and it seems that I did know about it a little bit, Still an interesting thing to read but I'm not surprised. Parasocial relationships has been increasing a ton throughout the years and that's on a global scale not just a specific region, I wont go into it too much since that's a whole other topic,
"The cn player base won't care if there is yuri..."
But that's the thing, they actually do care and they don't even want yuri in snowbreak, The devs removed Chenxing's and Siri's friendship from the story for example. If you read the reddit post that I mentioned it even talks about that as well. It really does go deeper then just "or more accurately the CN player base that just want self insert harem fap material..."
I understand the sentiment. A place where we can go talk about exactly what we like without being interrupted by others who want something else, would be a nice place for some people to be. An echo chamber of sorts. I'm not against nor in favor of it. But usually, unless very exclusive, Internet forums are not such places. Not only the rules around here won't enforce anything against differing opinions and petitions, asking all regulars to ignore those people instead of refuting them openly, is pretty much an exercise in futility.
In the same vein, I'm also not telling you to give it up. But I can tell you it's extremely unlikely for people to heed what you are asking. More difficult when we already know some people just won't stop no matter what. So don't be disheartened when the answer you get is a plain no.
This isn't 2014 it's 2024. People are already awake and know how to spot people like you. The reason gatekeeping is getting more aggressive and common is because people know the penalty of being passive. Now that most of gaming is complete slop, the few fun things left are going to have a much more vocal fanbase. Blue Archive being another example of a gacha with a vocal fanbase who has had to constantly fight outsiders and tourists trying to change the game.
Let me ask you this: If your so certain that the devs will not change course, nor listen to suggestions such as that in the OP, what are you worried about?
Is it the fact that your points have been thoroughly refuted, with both examples and data, leaving you feeling ill-at-ease? If that's the case, you can take solace in your confidence that no changes will come to pass.
You don't get to, and won't, dictate what discussions can and cannot happen, however.
If you'll notice, while I actually would like to have a female MC option, as you pointed out, and I confirmed, I have made no arguments positive to this case. You'll notice that this is also the case for Groen90 (as in, no arguments were made positive to the case).
What we have done here, is point out when false claims or flawed arguments are being made. Just because we're not actively advocating for something does not mean we will sit by and let falsehoods or poor argumentation slip by. I can't speak for Groen90, but that's just not something I am wont to do.
You know XKCD comic, Duty Calls?
The, "Someone is wrong on the internet." one?
"What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
That's me (not literally). At least on occasion.
Anyway, if you want to make the statement that having more options for players is a bad idea (yes, I am intentionally construing your position in a poor, but still technically true-to-this-case light), you're free to do so, but when you do so, I expect you to do so with actual solid evidence that is the case, if you are inclined to present it. When the evidence you cite is flawed, or just outright false, I'm inclined to call it out.
Other people have already pointed out the previous issues and why a female MC isn't needed and why it'll likely cause way more problems than it solves. Your best retort is pointing to some manga that most players don't read as well as trying to advocate for a gender ambiguous MC. Well, it's pretty late for that and also in terms of Azur Lane, the commander is overwhelmingly represented as male, why? Because the majority of the players are male.
That has always been the case and forever will be the case in games like this. The fact that you can't accept this and understand why a country like China or South Korea, countries where the gender wars are very hot, would react negatively to these changes shows that you either don't care or don't know about what you're advocating for.
With this in mind, why waste time honestly replying to any of you? You're just arguing in circles because... you've got nothing else better to do? Idk, I was simply surprised this is still going. I see it's going nowhere and will likely cease replying unless I come back and still see this thread somehow still continuing.
Given that the devs aren't going to make the change and none of you really have any reason that makes sense. I guess you can have fun arguing in circles with each other.
