Unlocking things is bad strategy?
Kind of weird balance issue, unlocking new things just dilutes the pool of already working items and strategies. Unless I missed a way to pick and choose what items are available, it seems like I'm best off not unlocking any more things than I had once realizing the problem.

I mean, if you can get amazing synergies based on the few unlocks you have then yes, but if you crave more variety, unlocking things is a must, I assume you don't want to challenge yourself so just don't unlock many things

You can always start a new profile on the other two slots which of course start with 3 free unlocks initially

Yep. The game got noticeably more difficult after unlocking everything. There's a lot of bad item bloat and not enough rerolls.
I just noticed this. The top review even states this fact, and I agree with said person: How did that go unnoticed during testing?

I like the game, but RNG on top of RNG isn't good game design. This is why Vampire Survivors (to name an example) allows you to ban items from the pool.

Item bloat can certainly ruin your builds, as it stands right now. I believe I saw a profile reset button... sadly I'll make use of it, until this gets reworked - if it ever does.

This is the weakest point of the game. They just dump it all on you at once, right out of the gate. It's crap.

Honestly, I am about the refund this game and write a negative review due to these developments choices. Major flaw in the game imo, which other rogue-likes have solved already... Steal some of the good ideas!

If it's radio silence from the devs for the next week I'll refund so I can get something else during the sale. It's a shame because this game has a ton of potential, and I love Peggle-likes.

Skipping the unlock machine choices would be a really cool feature. It would be RNG but you could then customize the drawing pool. A way to "ban" unwanted stuff.

Really thought about getting the game but after reading this i am not sure anymore ... I have read they will add a "END TURN" Button (which is another thing that really seems to have needed a change) but i have the feeling this issue should be addressed too ...

I think this is a case of optimization ruining fun- unlocking new things and doing different strategies is fun! being forced to work with what youre given is fun and ensures you're not always making the exact same build every time! i think the real design problem here is allowing the player to avoid unlocks at all- it should be mandatory to unlock after finishing the run. Slay the spire and many other great roguelikes do it like this for a reason. They don't give space for this kind of complaint despite similar conditions (the games are designed with every unlock in mind)

and i do need to say, as polarizing as you may find this: the blurring of the line between gamers and developers lets people call this "bad game design" just because it makes the game slightly harder/further from your own perception of what the game should be. truly "bad game design" is a rare thing and it certainly doesn't apply to this situation. This is the developers intention and people need to feel more comfortable playing the developer's vision, or simply refunding if you really don't like it. This is hardly worth a negative review (it's still a good well-made game and the developers clearly care about what they made)

This is pretty common in roguelikes: Unlocking things makes the game more fun, not more easy. Though it does really hurt the items that need multiples, like tomato, cave, and grape vine.

well, the game certainly didn't get any easier after unlocking everything
and now it's also less fun because there is nothing left to unlock

I want to like this game because bonking balls is cool
but it's just not that fun to lose constantly, even with good synergies

all im reading is skill issue
whats the point of playing a game that doesnt challenge you
pruitcake Dec 24, 2024 @ 3:03pm
This is an "issue" in a lot of roguelikes with unlocks as a form of progression, but its not really an issue unless you only like to play a few or single styles/decks/etc. More variety is good and the game should get more difficult the further along you go IMO.

How much of this game is skill vs luck? There are some simple additions that could make things a bit less RNG. An example would be bans or increased selections between rounds. I enjoy the variety in the game, but there are lots of triggers that are worthless in some runs... Rolling the 1/100 trigger draft you needed a isn't a measure of skill...

later on at the highest difficulty i'd say a bit of both with more so luck when the board is nearly empty at the start. im not sure if this is true but i do tend to get more items that synergize with each other when i already have one that does and i'm not focused on one synergy i use about two or three. proper placement is key

builds that i use is anything that creates balls(credit card currently my favorite) and holders. a dam under a copse of trees and some recycle bins to the sides at the bottom give crazy amounts of money over the course of the run also a trash can for when those credit cards are used up.
