How expand farm area?

I'm not sure if I've missed something, but how can you expand your playing area beyond the initial limits? Does something trigger that to happen automatically or do you have to buy it? How do you do trigger or buy it? I'd like to know what I'm working toward.

Loving the game, its so simple but absurdly addictive.

As far as I can tell, dragging with right-click moves the camera but it doesn't expand the size of the farm area. Both sides of the game window are blocked with a patchwork pattern that I don't recall being there in the demo. It doesn't seem to be interactive, or at least I can't figure out how to remove it.

Think you have to purchase those areas

There is a button with a small bulldozer and a number on either side. Click on that to purchase an expansion of the area. Rusty/Haiku will then walk over and clear it.

Can confirm, the middle of the area shows the purchase cost (underneath a bulldozer icon) to unlock that area. Once you purchase the unlock, Rusty or Haiku will clear out all the junk, turning the space into grass that you can now build on.

Thanks for the explanations, that makes sense! I was looking for some way to unlock the blocks but it would have taken me a long time to notice that number in the middle, lol
