The ladder, what's the deal?

If you haven't played this yet, I've literally just started and have stumbled upon something that may or may not be a spoiler. So... read at your expense.

The game says that there's no monsters or jump scares, and it's eerie and creepy. However the thought process was that "you as the player are alone. And hear things and that's about it". However... when you get to the spot of a ladder leading to a dark square, the ladder suddenly get's pulled up. That immediately is "you're not alone" and that there is either a monster, or another entity.

Isn't that counter intuitive to the "not being a jump scare or monster" spiel? It breaks the idea of eerie creepy lost and alone shtick, and turns it into a "at any moment I'm going to get to interact with whatever that was"... however if you never do, isn't that a horrible tease more than anything?

Genuinely curious is why.. plus: I bought this for my 9 year old, cause creepy is fine. And at times in life there's creepy places that he'll have to learn to face. Because sometimes you have to see past the creepy fog in a enchanted forest to realize how beautiful of a place you've found sort of scenario. However I'd have to remove via family control if a monster pops out giving him nightmares and wife and I have him trying to sleep in our room the next few months.[/spoilers]

Just a spooky moment. There is no visible entity or any entity that wants to harm you. You are completely safe in the game. There are no jumpscares.

Thanks, saw a few things since. Got to level 3 I think.. Hands on the ladder in the water was cool. Boy no longer wants to play cause he's too scared, kinda funny considering however he'll eventually play it when he gathers the courage I'm sure.

Glad nothing of "nightmare inducing levels" the level is perfect for the amount.

The hands on the underwater ladder seemed to me like a visual cue from the game saying 'This ladder can be climbed down' because it just looked so graphically out of place from the rest of the game. I wasn't able to climb down it anyway lol.
