GameGuru Classic

GameGuru Classic

huge file size for standalone games
my levels appear to be ridiculuous file sizes. as a test I saved a flat map, no lightmapping, player start, one barrel and a winzone.
174mb

55mb in the effect bank can't be right, can it?

anybody have suggestions before I try and reinstall it all?

edited: I just found some mention of this on the GG forums, but not anything that helps.

Seems about right, with the skybox, the terrain textures, the Veg bank, the huds, the sounds.

After this is finished, you can compress the file to send it to someone, should be at 77mb compressed.

Actually thats smaller than a blank map with just a blank map and marker :)

To be honest what you have saved is almost a blank engine .... But you need the engine or there is no game .... all the effects, shaders etc are still saved ( as the blank engine ) in the standalone ..thats the smallest size the engine needs to run

After that you add your Entities, models , routines and scripts then the game size will increase from that ... But the 55meg effect bank containing the default effect will probably remain the same

However GG is constanly being optimised

thanks for the quick answers. some of my small levels are coming out at 800mb to 1gb or more, its all just for the sake of learning and getting the hang of GG, but the levels did feel very excessive file size for what assets and content I was putting in. looks like I need to learn to cut down on the number of different entities drastically and put more imagination into the levels and terrain ;)

Can you go thru the stanalone folders and look at the entity bank folder. and see what the texture sizes are, Also on a larger level the light map files could be of a large amount also.

on the simple map (start/barrel/winzone) they are just the size you expect I guess (.dds files 129k each)

I think I have got to the bottom of it, or it might a bug. Looking closer into what files have been saved on earlier standalone levels that I thought seemed very large files I can see that
when it has compiled one of my own levels, on some of them GG has included a random lot of entities and sometimes other content from other levels.

A mystery, indeed.

Well, its early access, so we excpect these things to happen. If I come up with any thoughts or find anything I'll post back.

This could be possible to to a bug we found where sprayed entities could not be deleted in 3d edit mode, thus leaving entities, also things could get hidden under the terrain, and are now represented by a wireframe box. But a simple map should clear all that was previous.

In the folder of each standalone build there is a file called contents.txt, it is supposed to list the assets used in that level. also there is a Guru-Game log file also, that may shed some light on this.

Compare the contents with what is actually copied over, and see where the difference is.

And thank for understanding that it is Early access and things are supposed to go wrong.

Yes Myke, thats where I found out there were the extra assests, from the contents.txt just as you say.

the log file is also very handy for finding which assets GameGuru had problems loading - perhaps these assets were also the ones it had problems with the lighting when it compiled.

I have my lost in time level 1,2 which are relativly small and level 3 which is unfinshed but all are very detailed levels, clocking in at 1.3gb, and as you know myke level 1 is pretty detailed, and there is more added now since you played it through, less bugs now.

When using clickteams installer it compresses down to 514mb.

These are not outragous sizes. if you go thru them and see what the stuff is and what size it is.

The level you sent me was 738 MB with 300mb going to entities, 70mb going to videos, 15mb to titlesbanks stuff, gamecore 117mb, 15mb of decals, 67 mb of effects, 27mb of sounds, 20mb for the terrain. and the rest are a meg here and there

Now I dont recall seeing Jetpacks in there, but there is 97mb of hudlayers in there.
which would bring your level down to 626mb.

Now the other thing you have to think about is that the working model, the dbo file that is made from the xfile can be 2 to 3 times bigger then your x file for each object.

So these are completly normal from what I see., so your 3rd more complex level I could see being 1.3gb. These are uncompressed, so when you arechive these out, that file will be close to 40% smaller to send or burn to some media for distribution.

coool thanks for explaining that one out myke
